My dog went blind (in less than a few months of diagnosis) and I had cataract surgery performed on him. His vision is back to normal, which makes me soooo happy

Also, I was terrified when I had to give Jory (my baby) his first shot and in the beginning he would cry because I was using syringes from the vet. What I found is that you can get syringes from the drug store that are much thinner guage, which makes it more comfortable for the dog. PLEASE NOTE there is a difference in dosing if you are using Vetsulin. Syringes from the vet for Vetsulin are U40 and at the drug store they are U100, which means that you have to do a simple conversion to dose properly. It is 2.5 to 1. So if you give your dog 2 units in the U40 syringe, it is 5 units in the U100. The cheapest I have found is the Walgreens Brand, which is $18 for 100 syringes. In some states, you have to have your vet fax a script for them. I use the 31 guage Ultra Fine II short needles, but my dog's fur is short. If The nice thing is that they do not react to these needles because they are so thin. If you switch insulins, then you do not need a conversion.

Since you put a few pictures in your album I wanted to start a thread for you. I loved the pictures of your rottie and, I take it, a Min Pin together! When I first saw the tiny avatar, I thought it was a rottie with puppies!

They are kind of like Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie "Twins!"

Thanks so much for the nice note. I am soooooo relieved that there are other diabetic dog owners who care as much as I do about how to keep our babies happy and healthy for as long as possible.

Jory has been diabetic for 1 year and 8 months. I have been a crazy researcher and do-it-yourselfer from the beginning. I learned how to draw his blood from his back leg within 1 month of diagnosis. I do his curves myself because he trusts me and it is less stressful for both of us.

I also learned how to give Subcutaneous fluids 2 months ago after a bad vial of Vetsulin. I think that I am going to write a list of the things I have learned and share them in the forum. I want to help as many people as I can and I definitely appreciate all of the insight that I have seen so far here. Jory is the love of my life on 4 legs and his Bigger, but younger, brother Ozzy is right up there with him. I would do anything for them : )

I'll post more photos, I have heard the Twins comment before. They are quite a pair and we love them dearly.

You sure have two beautiful boys! Min pins do have a way of wrapping us around their little paws! We have Daygo, our red, and Tess, a 2 year old black and tan min pin. There's never a dull moment with two pins in the house. Sounds like you've got two lucky furbabies with you to take care of them!

Just to say welcome, I love the photo's of your dogs

I have a miniature Schnauzer called Lucy who had cataract surgery on the 12th Sept and she is doing well.

I will follow your threads as I am still trying to get Lucy's numbers fixed out as she is still on pred eye drops, and they played havoc with her Bg's.

I see the opthalmologist a week on Mon so we are hoping she might come off them
