  • Buffalo Blue dog food and Orejen

I just would liked some info on both foods and if anyone on the board is giving to their dogs. I just changed to the Chicken Orejen it has only about 10 days and Baby has high and lows. When reading the post some are recommending Buffalo Blue what is the difference is it a high protein dog food.

I did not want to start up giving Baby canned food again between the canned dog food and dry we were spending so much. She was eating Wellness canned dog food and starving all the time even with string beans, and chopped chicken.

I want best for Baby but, she just was to hungry on this W./d dry food. I also, used Alpha Track strips so cost wise, between strips, food, needles, insulin we were spending a lot and she was not happy with the food it would be gone in 3 seconds and she would licking the floor looking for more. I could not find any treats to give her she would run high - we would give herpieces of chicken now and then during the day. So I decided to changed too Orejen and my vet said it was a very good food. Pls let me know how any of your dogs do. Baby did lose a lot of weight on w/d she was 107 and now she is 82 poinds but, I noticed everytime we took her in too have her nails clip she was losing a pound every two months.

Blue Buffalo comes in both dry and canned. i gave Forbin Blue Buffalo dry weight control. I did add a bit of canned because he liked it. he loved the dry though. Blue Buffalo does make a high protein food like Orijen. Its called Wilderness. if the high protein isn't working I wouldn't buy wilderness. BB weight control is 20% protein and 6% fat. Its percent protein/carbs etc are identical to DCO. Hope this helps IDA
Forbin, miss you every day. See you at the bridge Buddy.

They make quite a few varieties...

It really is just a matter of trial and error as every dog reacts differently. And as others have said, sometimes adding some fiber or even a mid-day meal if you can do that daily can make a big difference.

I feed Dozer Blue Buffalo Wilderness (chicken) dry food and he loves it. I do give him ORGANIX treats every now & then that don't seem to affect his BG - they are pretty small & all organic - here are the ingredients from the Chicken Flavor but they all have free range organic chicken as #1 ingredient

Ingredients: Organic Chicken, Organic Peas, Organic Brown Rice, Organic Oats, Organic Barley, Organic Chicken Fat naturally preserved with Mixed Tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), Natural Chicken Liver Flavor, Organic Flaxseed, Rosemary Extract.

        Guaranteed Analysis:
        Crude Protein (min).15.0%
        Crude Fat (min).14.0%
        Crude Fiber (max)...5.0%
        Moisture (max)...10.0%

Re: Buffalo Blue dog food and Orejen

Baby was doing ok for while it has been a month on the Wilderness dog food Orenj then by accident my husband made up her food for two days and added too much chicken and green beans so she went really high until I notice she was eating too much food.

Now, I had that under control it took at least wk but, she was still in the 200's and taking 16 in the am and pm then I had too lower in pm to 15 1/2 now I think I used a syringe from Walgreen's it looked the same for 30 units but, didn't have the 1/2 lines and I didn't noticed So I think for two shots she got too much insulin and yesterday she woke up with 226 reading I gave her 16 units and noticed the difference in syringes so I switched back too the Walmart brands the ones I have always been using and gave her 16 at night. the problem was at feeding time 5 pm she was 107 so I waited to give her the shot till she was 158 at least 20 min and I gave her 16 well by 7pm she was 91 at 8pm she dropped to 81 and then half hr late 74 I had too give her some syrup so she wouldn't go any lower.

This has never happened I could not figure out why she her bg never went up after eating it just started too dropped within the 2 hrs after feeding.

Should I have given her some syrup too raise her bg wait then feed her then give her the shot.

I feel liked I am back where I was I wished I didn't changed her food but, she seems less hungry on this Wilderness buffalo food.

she weighs 83 poinds now this am she was high from the syrup 312 and I lower her insulin to 15 and wanted too start all over again. I think also giving her a little higher one day and then lower the next day didn't help in insulin. I really need her pretty regulated soon I go for another eye surgery in two wks I see th doc tues. five retina's too saved my eye so I am careful when I give her the shot.

I just need info I read on the other lab near baby
weight and he is only getting dry food 2 cup in am and pm I forgot what insulin dosage he is on but, I think he is eating the other Buffalo Blue will read post again. Any help will be appreciate.

Re: Buffalo Blue dog food and Orejen

See if you can get her back on track with a lower stable dose of insulin and then could you do a curve?

The best way to sort it out is to find a stable place where she has no low blood sugar. Let everything settle down for about five days. And then do a curve and see what her food/insulin balance looks like.

You do kind of "start over" - it's the sanest way to do it (if there is such a thing).

I know Dolly uses Orijen but as a general rule I think people have had a hard time getting a good balance from it. The Buffalo Blue has been working extremely well for a lot of dogs. So after your eye surgery is done, you could think about trying it.

I would aim for a stable regimen on the Orijen until your eye surgery is done though.

Gosh, you have been through so much with your eyes. I hope you won't have to do another one.

              Hang in there Ida,

              Natalie

I am using wilderness now and I am getting a 50 point decline at the end of her cycle how were the numbers affected when switching to weight control from wilderness did it flatten it out more and how did it effect the insulin dose I have just started getting much better numbers but would like to stop the drop off at the end of the cycle its about 60 points and maybe weight control would help . any help would be appreciated

thank you they did not have the weight control at pet smart so i got the blue healthy weight any thoughts on on that product . Well if it doesn't do the job pet smart said i can return it. I liked it because the crude fat we was lower 6 percent maybe ill try it tonight.

Is it a yellow bag? It's the same one - they changed the name on the bag from Weight Control to Healthy Weight in recent months.

yes it is a yellow bag that's a good thing her numbers have vastly improved after I determined that after her meal it is taking 3.5 hours for sugar to enter her system and I timed that with her shot that begins at 1.5 hours so I ended up feeding her 1.5 hours before her shot a half hour early I may have to go 15 minutes later because she it is still dropping maybe 50 points before it stabilizes which eliminate the big spikes down and up but there are some 50 point swings especially at the end of her cycle about 4 hour before her shot to 1 hour before her next shot where she drops 50 to 70 points and being in the hundreds that can be a problem if i am not around may this food will start a little earlier and I might have to feed her earlier . I am wondering if this new blue will affect digestion time from wilderness any thoughts would be appreciated as you know timing is every thing
