Jeanne posts all the time at the Cushings board, which is set up just like this one, so navigating the forum probably isn't the problem.

Sounds like some other computer issue. I sent her an email to check on Kiska and to see if she can give me an idea of what's happening on her end as far as posting. I see she hasn't posted to the Cushings board this morning either.

Kiska probably got into some cat food yesterday and the evening insulin injection may have missed as Kiska's fur was wet. So it's not surprising that Kiska's running high this morning. I expect things will settle down.

Jeanne,

We once had a problem something like what you may be having. The difference here was that we got a weak vial of Iletin II Lente pork insulin which caused Lucky's bg's to rise because the weak insulin wasn't controlling them properly.

The insulin was a brand-new vial and replacing one which had just started losing potency. When Lilly still made pork insulin, you had to order it from your pharmacy--it took a few days to get it--so it wasn't just a question of getting another vial.

What we had to do is use the old one, which we were trying to replace. We did not change his unit doses because while we knew the old vial was no longer 100% potent, we didn't know exactly how much potency it had left.

Lucky's bg's were high enough to cause visible post-meal spiking signs--he started panting 2 hours after eating, because he'd begun to digest his meal. The old vial we were trying to replace was more potent than the new one we'd started a couple of days before; every time he'd get a shot with insulin from the old vial, you could see that the visible post-meal spikes were getting less obvious and were shorter in duration.

We didn't totally get rid of the visible post-meal spiking panting and get his bg's back to normal until 3 days after we went back to using the old vial of insulin. We tested some of the new vial and found that it was about 45-50% potent--the legal low end on insulin potency is 95%.

So basically what I'm trying to say to you is to hang in there--it may not take you a full 3 days to get Kiska back to normal because you're not dealing with less then potent insulin as we had to.

http://petdiabetes.wikia.com/wiki/Avoiding_Hypos#Partial_doses.2C_missed_shots.2C_fu r_shots.2C_etc.

"If you have only administered a portion of the insulin injection, do not try giving more. You are not certain actually how much insulin really went where it was meant to. Trying to draw more to make up for the error may result in a total of too much insulin being given--the result being hypoglycemia.

Even if every last drop from the syringe went into the fur and not under the skin, the safest thing to do is to leave it at that, not giving any insulin until the next scheduled dose is due. Missing one shot will not result in permanent damage nor will it mean that your regulated pet will become un-regulated and you will have to begin all over again. It may mean some higher than usual blood glucose values for possibly 2-3 days which can be handled by staying with your usual dosage & insulin schedule."

Johanna,

I'm going to close this post so that Kiska's mom can start a new one of her very own when things get sorted out. That way we won't have to merge the stuff here with her new thread in our effort to keep everything together.

Just wanted you to know why I was doing it.

And if she is still having problems posting a new thread, she can reply to my message - Kiska's Mom - Please Read (which I will later delete) or email me since she has my email. She can also reach me through the Cushings board so I know we will get her going whatever the problem is.
