My 13 year old dog Zeke is diabetic and has been on Vetsulin for 2 1/2 years. I am really nervous about the FDA annoncement regarding Vetsulin. Hopefully they will get the problem resolved quickly. Please check out Zekes' website www.diabeticdogs.info

Hi Paula,
Welcome to you and Zeke - Zeke is adorable!
How big is he?
Sounds like you plan to try to ride out any potential shortages - are you stockpiling Vetsulin?

Paula - welcome - glad to see you posting. I did check out Zeke's web site; looks really interesting, and I'm very glad to see another site with information to help people who have diabetic dogs.
I have a question for you, though. I see mention near the top of your page of related topics, including how to give a shot. I'm always interested in how people treat this topic, because I'm sure you know some newcomers to diabetes in dogs have a heck of a time learning how to give injections!
But I wasn't able to use your note there to FIND the place on your site (if it's there, which I presume it is?) that describes that!
Or, if it's not on your site, but somewhere else, any old however - can you help me find it?
Thanks!
And I'm very glad you joined us here.
Zeke is, indeed, a very attractive dog, and I love the story of how you got him.

I haven't posted here in quite a while, probably since the Vetsulin Critical Need program was announced a while ago. My dog Zeke, who will be 15 in December, started on Vetsulin in July 2007. We obtained approval for him to get Vetsulin through the Critical Need program which was cancelled a while back. When that heppened I was ordering Caninsulin from Canada by mail which worked for a while.
Recently the Canadian supplies of Caninsulin dried up and were unavailable so my Vet and I made the decision that it was time to switch Zeke to NPH. I was very nervous and worried about it since Zeke did so well on Vetsulin for so long.
I am happy to report that after 3 weeks Zeke is doing great on 12 units of NPH in the morning and 12 in the evening. And I am saving a ton of money on the insulin which I buy over the counter at the Walmart Pharmacy. In addition I don't have to spend money on shipping to get it. Now I only wish that I had switched Zeke sooner but I am happy that he continues to do well.

that is fantastic
I changed jesse the first week of diagnosis we were the first to go to nph at my vets office at the time we will never know if she would have done better on vetsulin the reason we changed so soon in the dx was not the possible problems with the insulin but the eventual disappearance of it all together
hopefully nph will remain on the market for a long time to come I am not sure if we will ever see a new dog insulin ever again or the return of vetsulin
I would say nph is not perfect for jesse but we can make it work with some adjustments here and there
glad zeke did so well i guess you'll be saying to yourself why did i wait so long but it sounds like a smooth transition

That's great news Paula! :)
It seems like getting Vetsulin is almost impossible now.
