  • Pita's Story

    Let's start with the basics

Name - Pita (not the animal group, not the bread, more the the "pain-in-the-you-know-what-I-mean) even though it is more of a joke because she's the dog that every groomer, vet and doggie daycare worker wants to steal from me
Breed - good question - she is a mix - I mean I can see german shepherd, lab, maybe a little pit mixed in for good measure - I wanted to do a DNA test on her just for my curiosity, but it really doesn't matter
Birth date or age - estimated DOB 1/7/05 but not sure as she was a stray
Weight - right now she is at 48 lbs - she was a high of 65 (chunky) and a low of 43 (skeleton) and she is starting to look much better
Date diagnosed with diabetes - 8/25/11
Type of insulin and how often given - Humalin-N - at this point 12 units/2xs
Diet - she is in the process of changing to Wellness Core Reduced Fat
Method of monitoring (home blood glucose testing, urine testing, clinical signs) - she just had her first curve on Friday but I want to do home glucose testing and am in the process of deciding on the actual meter.
Other medical issues - Pita was always the healthiest dog I ever dealt with until about three months ago. When she was a puppy and we rescued her at 10 weeks, she had 7 different internal parasites and giardia and we spent $1000 on her to get it all taken care of, but since then, it's been shots and wellness checks and no real issues.

She seems to be doing a lot better with the higher dose - the vet that originally diagnosed started her on 10 units but she was so fixated on having to do the tests herself at $189/ea and refused to work with us - she even seemed to have an issue with us doing "spot checks" at home - I guess preferring to get $57.00 to do it. I fired her.

My new vet is all about the dog and she is willing to work with me and help me learn how to do the testing at home, as long as I don't try to change the dosages myself. No problem there!

It's a learning curve, but I have to learn fast!

    Re: Pita's Story

it sounds like your on a good path and good understanding with the new vet a good methodical process on getting things done

home testing is a plus and the disease can definitely have its ups and downs so trying not to get to excited emotionally either direction does help but can be difficult to accomplish at times

If you want you can post some curves and how much insulin was given at the time if you have any or post some of the upcoming numbers you will get soon I presume

welcome the site has a wealth of information and wonderful people that can just make life better for both of you
Jesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .

        Re: Pita's Story

Here are the numbers from the first (and so far only) curve which was done on Friday and consisted of 5 draws:
        Pre-Insulin - 365
Then she had her food and went as follows: 435, 442, 547, 476
At the time, she was on 10 units/2xs and the vet changed her to 12 units/2xs. It is only the third day, but the original dose seemed to help for a couple of days and then she went back to the drinking, peeing, sleeping mode.
Today is actually day 3 and she is STILL more like herself than she has been in over two months!

            Are you home testing yet?
If not, you really need to.
I never went back to the vet after diagnosis as the goal of lower sugar is pretty obvious.
Get that sugar under 200 before the $2000+ cataract surgery comes into play.

              Re: Pita's Story

Last night, we were in the process of "tech testing" our new meter (that was a disaster), but the tech actually tested Pita with the Alpha Trak that they use for the curves and (considering that she was at the approx same time frame from insulin/feeding as the original curve) she went from 435 to 212. I was ecstatic!!
I was PLANNING to fo the 2nd curve today, but the meter issues put a stop to that. I am still planning on Tuesday for it (so at 10 days from the first one and 19 days from actual diagnosis, I think I should be ok).
And where is it $2500 for cataract surgery, I have heard as high as $4500?
