  • Antibiotics and Bacteria

I belong to K9Kidney group, and I just read the most fascinating thing from a vet participating in that group. I was complaining about Harry's glucose acting up whenever he is on antibiotics.
She says that bacteria consumes a lot of glucose from the blood and that as they die off, they release a lot of glucose. This may be why antibiotics seem to raise BGs.
Interestingly, I noticed that before an appearance of a major infection, Harry would have a sudden hypoglycemic episode (like two nights ago). This could be explained by this theory.

I guess another factor on BG is a body's response to infection - how much cortisol and other hormones are released.
