  • Gus's story....need help please

As of today, 1/10/12, Gus takes 23u NPH twice daily, takes thyrosen .6mg twice daily, 3 bendadryl twice daily, 3 cups dry WD and 1/2 can WD twice daily. On 12/15/11 diagnosis of diabetes due to prednisone he was on for allergies. Since then I have been told he has or could have neuropathy, facial paralysis, hypothyroid....Currently Gus is doing a lot better with regulation of diabetes. Main problem now is what to do about the allergies. He has lots of hair missing on tail, belly, and shoulder. Ears are starting to bother him again as well. I am overly anxious to get some feedback from this incredible family of K9 friends....Any suggestions Gus and I would appreciate!!!!Sorry there were no introductions but please read Gus's story now. Thanks

My name is Jake. I am the proud father of a 6yr old black lab named Gus. Gus was diagnosed with diabetes on 12/15/11 with a glucose level of 457. After diagnosis they told me 9u of NPH twice daily recheck in 2 weeks. After 48 hours I did not see much change so I took him back to vet-glucose 350, raise to 12u NPH recheck in 1 week. 24 hours went by and I did not see much improvement and took him back to vet-glucose 300, raise to......Im sure you get what Im saying. Long story short, do to my own research online I learned to be aggressive with him, I am the one that requested the glucose curve, etc. He has been at 23u NPH twice daily for the last 6 days and seems to be doing a lot better....with the diabetes. Now the problem is what to do about what caused this whole scenario in the first place. He has suffered allergies his whole life and been on 1 20mg dose of prednisone since around the age of 3. The allergies began around 1 and it took a year and a half or so of switchin foods and treating with pred as needed until we put him on it long term. I got the advice of 3 different vet clinics and they all agreed that pred was the right thing to do and the side effects longterm are minimal to nil. So, I was a little irritated-to put it nicely-when the vet told me they were extremely confident prednisone caused the diabetes. Back to now, with initial diagnosis of diabetes the vet weened him off pred and put him on Atopica. Without expounding, we stopped that after 3 days do to RX overload and for the last couple weeks treated him with 3 benadryl twice daily. I could write 20more pages but I would like to get some feedback asap so I want to wrap this up so the moderators can clear me to post.
