    Capital News|AP Wire Service October 20, 2008

"We have another pet food recall to tell you about. The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling some of its chicken-basted rawhide chips for dogs.

"There are concerns that some of the bags within a certain shipment are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

"The recall is only for the two-pound plastic bags of chips with the lot code JC 23282.

"Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs. So far there are no reports of any animals becoming ill.

    Newsday October 20, 2008

"The Hartz Mountain Corporation has voluntarily recalled a specific lot of its Hartz chicken-basted rawhide chips for dogs due to concerns that one or more bags within the lot are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

"The company announced the recall Friday, saying the two-pound plastic bags of chips with lot code JC23282, UPC number 3270096463 were distributed to a national retail customer it did not identify. "

    -----------------------

I will identify the retailer as WalMart. As of October 9, the items were off their shelves with a note "product recalled". There was no information from either WalMart or Hartz at the time as to why the products were recalled from WalMart shelves--nothing until now. The recall has not been turned in to FDA as yet either.
