Natalie and Kathy, this is just something I wanted to share with everyone here, so if you need to move it, feel free. I met a lady on Facebook who had a recently diagnosed lab mix, and gave her a link to this board, some food info, and some insulin info. Apparently, they were so new to this that insulin had not been started yet...from what I could gather, the vet was not so knowledgeable, and this lady didn't know what was going on either. I really just wanted to help the dog, and was relieved when she sent me a message saying that even though her dog was not eating well, she had been given her first insulin injection (by her 15 year old daughter), and she was hopeful that in a few days, she would be feeling better. When I contacted her the next morning, she told me that her dog had died earlier that day....when they awoke in the morning, she was in a coma from which she couldn't be revived. Needless to say, she is devastated, and I felt so sorry for her. But, thinking it over....first insulin injection...a few hours later in a coma. It sounds to me as though she was given an overdose of insulin...if this is the case, it could be attributed to several different things, or a combination of them. The dog had no appetite, so wasn't eating well, the young daughter prepared and gave the injection, and the vet wasn't really very knowledgeable. Regardless of the cause, this is a cautionary tale...low blood sugar can most definitely kill...and quickly. Of course, it would serve no purpose to tell this lady what probably led to her dog's death, but it can maybe help all of us to remember how very important it is to stay focused and vigilant with our friends' lives...sometimes I forget how important that little syringe of insulin is...and how powerful. Just thought someone else might benefit. I know I did.
