  • Sad story

Natalie and Kathy, this is just something I wanted to share with everyone here, so if you need to move it, feel free. I met a lady on Facebook who had a recently diagnosed lab mix, and gave her a link to this board, some food info, and some insulin info. Apparently, they were so new to this that insulin had not been started yet...from what I could gather, the vet was not so knowledgeable, and this lady didn't know what was going on either. I really just wanted to help the dog, and was relieved when she sent me a message saying that even though her dog was not eating well, she had been given her first insulin injection (by her 15 year old daughter), and she was hopeful that in a few days, she would be feeling better. When I contacted her the next morning, she told me that her dog had died earlier that day....when they awoke in the morning, she was in a coma from which she couldn't be revived. Needless to say, she is devastated, and I felt so sorry for her. But, thinking it over....first insulin injection...a few hours later in a coma. It sounds to me as though she was given an overdose of insulin...if this is the case, it could be attributed to several different things, or a combination of them. The dog had no appetite, so wasn't eating well, the young daughter prepared and gave the injection, and the vet wasn't really very knowledgeable. Regardless of the cause, this is a cautionary tale...low blood sugar can most definitely kill...and quickly. Of course, it would serve no purpose to tell this lady what probably led to her dog's death, but it can maybe help all of us to remember how very important it is to stay focused and vigilant with our friends' lives...sometimes I forget how important that little syringe of insulin is...and how powerful. Just thought someone else might benefit. I know I did.

Love and hugs, Teresa and Ricky

So, so sad! It hits you in the core. But sadly, I don't think this is a first and probably not a last either.
My prayers are with the lady and God's speed to her dog.

          Re: Sad story

That's my biggest stress caring for our new foster Lucy.

          "Am I doing it right?"

"Did all the insulin get into the dog?"

          "Did I go too deep?"

          "Did I miss completely?"

Thank doG for the people in this and other forums who are guiding me.

And thank doG her original vet seemed to know about diabetes and so does mine.

            Re: Sad story

Gosh..That is sad. It reminds me of a story a vet told me when Bo was so sick. I was having trouble getting Bo to eat but I still gave a small amt for his basal needs. Like 1 unit. The vet told me of a lady who was told if the dog did not eat do not give insulin. The dog was sick and wouldn't eat for several days. She gave no insulin for several days and the dog went into ketoacidosis and died.

I was told and read that they still need some insulin. Right Natalie? I was luckey because I could take Bo's BS at home. When Bo was first diagnosed I don't think he would have done as well if I hadn't found help on the boards from other diabetic owners. My vet was just taking his BS once a week 4 hours after shot and adjusting insulin on that. He did do one curve the first week and that was all. I finally learned to do the BS myself.

              Re: Sad story

They do still need insulin even when they don't eat and generally I prefer that they be given some insulin... usually they can have at least 1/4 of their dose if they don't eat. I could give Chris 1/3 to 1/2 his dose with no food. If someone doesn't home test, it's a risk suggesting that they give any insulin but the vet should be involved and ketones being monitored.

Teresa, can you PM me with the person's name or identifying information or even just facebook page?

Mainly because there are some incomplete registrations and I'd like to know if they were one of them. I'd also like to know where they are located if possible...

Anyway, if you feel comfortable with sharing, I'd like to know more about the situation.

There are cats on the feline board who have suffered brain damage from insulin overdose and I think a few have been lost as well. This is even more of a danger in cats than in dogs... it's so sad and scary... and the reason why I started participating in forums.

                  How awful for their family.

That's exactly what I was most afraid of when we first started this last week. Yet another reason I am so glad I found this board.
