Happy Tails Multi-Flavored Dog Biscuits Recalled-Salmonella Possible

"Jewel-Osco, a division of Supervalu Inc. and leading Chicago supermarket and drugstore chain, recalled its Happy Tails multi-flavored dog biscuits. Like humans, salmonella in pets can cause diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain. It can also be transferred to other animals or humans."

I believe the Happy Tails store brand is sold in other Supervalu chains, not just Jewel.

Jan 24---Jewel-Osco recalls Happy Tails DOG BISCUITS
Start Date: 2009-01-24 End Date: 2009-02-24

"Jewel-Osco said this morning it is recalling a brand of dog biscuits because it may contain peanut butter contaminated with salmonella.

"In a statement, the company described it as a "precautionary move" and said that the product has not been "directly linked to the salmonella outbreak" that resulted in a nationwide recall of some peanut products made by Peanut Corp. of America in its Blakely, Ga., facility.

The recalled products, sold at Jewel-Osco stores, are Happy Tails Brand Multi-Flavored Dog Biscuits in 26-ounce (UPC#: 41163-42406) and 4-pound (UPC#: 41163-42403) sizes.

"The release said that pets infected with salmonella "may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain." The release also said animals could carry the bacteria and infect humans or other animals.

"The company advised owners concerned their pets may have consumed the biscuits to consult a veterinarian.

"Owners can return the dog biscuits to a Jewel-Osco store for a full refund or exchange.

"The company said no other products are included in the recall at this time and that other peanut butter products in its stores are not part of the Peanut Corp. of America recall.

"Jewel-Osco, a SUPERVALU company, operates 186 stores in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana.

"Customers with questions can contact SUPERVALU at 877-932-7948"

Shaw's is Recalling Happy Tails and Shoppers Valu Brand Assorted Dog Biscuits

"WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Shaw's is voluntarily recalling Happy Tails and Shoppers Valu multi-flavored dog biscuit products because they may contain peanut butter that has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The products were sold at Shaw's stores. The identified items have not been directly linked to the salmonella outbreak. However, because the safety of customers, and in this case their pets, is a top priority and out of an abundance of caution, Shaw's has voluntarily recalled the products.

Customers with questions can contact SUPERVALU Inc. at 877.932.7948. Customers can visit the FDA Web page at www.fda.gov for more information and updates on the situation."

As shown by the Albertson's, Shaw's, and Shopper's Valu recalls, this does affect all SuperValu chain stores.

Carolina Prime Pet Announces Nationwide Recall of Dog Treats

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Murphy, North Carolina – Jan. 27, 2009 – Carolina Prime Pet, a manufacturer and distributor of dog treats, is voluntarily recalling four of its dog treats that contain peanut butter made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste.

The recalled treats are sold at various retail establishments in the U.S. and Canada. Although Carolina Prime Pet is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure.

The recalled products include only the following types of Carolina Prime Pet treats in single unit packages with lot date codes between 081508 and 010909:

6" Beef Shank Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542007
2pk Hooves Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542000
4" Rawhide Bone Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542003
6" Rawhide Bone Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542005
6” Healthy Hide Beef Shank Peanut Butter, UPC 09109333479

Customers who purchased the recalled dog treats should discontinue use immediately, and return items to the purchase location for replacement or refund.

So you see that the company doesn't only deal with PetSmart; the earlier recalls for these products were for items purchased at either of the stores.

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/brand_list.cfm?brand=Carolina%20Prime%20&cat=Pet%20Food

Link for first recall of these products--listed as PetSmart only.

Even though the date is January 23, this nationwide recall just "appeared" at FDA:

Although Salix is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure. The product comes in a clear plastic bag with attached header card and the name Deli Wraps on the front. The package is a 3-count of 5” chew treats and the Universal Product Code is 0-91093-33354-0. Major Expansion Announced in Peanut Recall
Georgia Plant Will Recall Every Single Peanut Product Made in Last Two Years
Jan. 28, 2009

"The FDA announced that a closed Georgia peanut processing plant will recall every single peanut product it made in the past two years. The expansion means that the number of recalled food and pet treats -- already in the hundreds -- will continue to grow.

"Health officials today said the recall is among the largest ever.

"The broadened recall comes after a scathing FDA inspection report suggested the plant in Blakely, Ga., owned by Peanut Corporation of America, knowingly sent out peanut products that may have been tainted with salmonella."

Easiest way I can think of to do this to start is to take the currently recalled items you have FDA info on and go with "all dates". This is what FDA is showing on their recall website, even though Pet Smart's doing dating on the Grreat Choice biscuits. FDA is not.

I don't know if it might get worse because they closed their Texas plant today because they believe they've found salmonella in that plant too. Keeping up with the people food recalls is almost impossible.

Believe it or not, I checked the American Nutrition website after reading the recall at FDA. There is not one word on the AN site about any products being recalled--their own brands or the ones they make for others.
