Hello,

Since Zeus has been such a good boy with his injections and now that we are brave enough to blood test I would like to give him a treat for his great efforts. Can anyone recommend any treats that are good for diabetics. I don't mind making my own if I need too.

I found the VitaLife Chicken Strips & Chips chicken is suppose to be the only ingredient. But, the are made in China not sure about that one.

What does everyone use as a treat?

Just a reminder that there's been a big "caution" out for the MIC chicken jerky since 2007. Late last year, the same problems which were and are still happening in North America with various brands of MIC treats, began happening in Australia too.

The Glycemic Research Institute also names pet foods and treats every year as the "best" of the year. This year they have managed to name a chicken jerky treat from China:

http://www.gripetfoods.com/PetTreatoftheYear.htm

What's wrong with this--the Chinese producer has been cited for salmonella and on the FDA's Import Alert list for it.

Certain products of ours are made at Yantai Pet Foods. Our biscuits, dry food and wet food are made in the USA.

So I'd say, no matter what type of stories you may hear about things being "different" about a company, if they are importing their products from China, there's nothing different about them at all--time to stay FAR, FAR away!

Lately, past 2 mo ? I have been drying chicken breast slices,I get any fat off, I bake the breasts, slice into 1/4 in pieces against the grain and put in dehydrator for about 6 hrs, makes good jerky treat, I put in glass jar and keep in fridge. They are good for about a week, I think you could freeze these but I have never tried that.

I use green beans or piece of brocolli head for a treat also.

Lady's favorite treat is the crunchy part of the lettuce leaf...she'll do anything for a piece of lettuce! She also likes broccoli and green beans. She loves carrots but they're not good for a diabetic.

My dog is a healthy (touch wood!) young cattle dog mix and I make my own jerky treats by drying thin strips of raw beef heart (trimmed of all fat) on racks in the oven - it takes about 16 hours or so.

Much cheaper than anything on the market ($15/kg (once dried)-v- about $40+ per kg) and best of all I know exactly where it comes from! Only draw back is that on "baking day" we tend to get a few flies finding their way into the kitchen.

The other thing I do specifically for "training treats" is when we have a roast I take any scraps (again trimmed of all fat) and cut them into small (less than 1/2 an inch cubes) pieces and spread them out on a plate and freeze them. Once they are frozen I put them in a clip-lock bag and remove a few and defrost as needed. These are his very favorite treats at the moment! Roast lamb seems to be especially motivating for Zac.

As of today I am the proud owner of an electric dehydrator. We purchased it because Hubby went a bit mad planting tomatoes this year and we have so many of them. I am going to attempt to do chicken strips and maybe even liver so I'll let you know how it goes when I get through reading the instructions and finally try to dry something.

I don't know what your "destructions" with the dehydrator say but I found that spraying the racks with non-stick cooking spray makes life a lot easier when dehydrating meat!

I use a fan forced oven. Apart from the fly invasion (which would probably happen with a dehydrator too) the other drawback is that it ties up the oven for a while. (Which means I have to be "organized":eek::eek:)

Treats right after a meal and injection do not have to be so carefully chosen as they essentially become just part of his meal calories.

Every day for five years Chris got a mini milkbone after his injection. Made him LOVE his injections and sometimes a bit impatient for them! :)

I wouldn't have given him one four or six hours later but right after food it's not such a big deal. And you still don't want pure junk food but a healthy low calorie biscuit or other snack shouldn't hurt anything. You can deduct the calories from his meal by reducing his meal portion a little.

Hey I'm with Natalie!!!! I buy treats on line because frankly I don't have time to make the treats! I home cook and that's about all I have time for. Dolly's jerky? Hmmm, I'd buy them too!

I haven't had a chance to play with the dehydrator yet. Hubby has lots of tomatoes that he is doing before I am allowed a turn.;)

Tomatoes here usually start to ripen about December but this year the warm weather was slow to kick in so it was Feb. before we started to get any. They are just about finished as it's starting to get cold overnight.

I buy these through my Vet and they work very well. Low calorie, high fiber and low fat.

I made the homemade chicken jerky by drying it in my oven. Amazing how it cooks down. An entire package of chicken breasts dried down to almost nothing. With four dogs, it was a lot of work that did not last long.
Now I understand why they are so expensive.

You can do the same thing with beef heart (trimmed of all fat). It is about 1/3 of the price - at least it is here in Australia. You basically lose about 2/3 of the weight of the meat when you dehydrate it. My heart jerky works out at about $15.00 per kg (plus a small amount for electricity, I guess) while most commercial jerky treats are at least $40.00 per kg.

The Purina lite snackers I tried about a year ago, they did not help us with bg just made Niki's bg go up, course nothing Purina seemed to work with Niki, I stick with giving some veg's and maybe 1 or 2 of her kibble and a small piece of chicken jerky.
