  • Vetsulin alternative

I ran across a link to insulin from Walmart on this forum at:
    http://www.k9diabetes.com/forum/show...etsulin&page=9

Does anyone know if Walmart will accept a prescription from my vet? I'm currently using Vetsulin and:
    Insulin Syringes U-40 1/2cc Ulti-Fine 29g x 1/2&quot 100ct Box #10725 U09260

I'm trying to find a cheaper solution.

    Thank you,

    Re: Vetsulin alternative

While you don't need a prescription for non-analog insulin, according to law, it's sometimes the policy of the pharmacy to ask for one--same is true for syringes if there's no state law requiring it.

I take it you mean this post:

There should be no problem with W-M's acceptance of your vet's prescription--just remember that you will need a prescription for U 100 insulin syringes also because this is U 100 insulin, and it needs different syringes than the U 40 ones you have for the Vetsulin. Using U 40 syringes for U 100 insulin, if you're not dividing by 2.5 can result in an insulin overdose.

You need an rx for the syringes here in PA they should give you the Relion brand as long as vet has checked can use generic, if thats on a pet rx.

For the NPH Insulin you shouldn't have a problem as long as you have an rx, Niki was on Humulin NPH for 2 yrs, then I found out about the Walmart/Novolin brand, all I had to do was ask for that.
After that I did not need an rx to buy it, but I am not sure you can just walk in and ask for it if they don't know you.

Make sure its stamped with the Relion on the box for the price of 21.95 or so.

Hmph... not only does it depend on your state, but whicj store you go to.

Here in California i went to one WalMart & got Novolin N and U100 syringes no questions asked.

Went to another one a few miles away. They sold me the insulin but wanted a Rx from the vet for the syringes.

Turns out it was a STORE policy. GRRRR...

No problem, tho. Went to the other WalMart & got what I needed. PITA tho...

So it might be a good idea to have documentation from your vet regardless.

        One note on switching.

When Lucy switched her vet took her from 10 IU of the Vetsulin x twice daily to 8 IU of the NPH x twice daily. This worked well. 10 IU of the NPH would have been too much.
