  • Hello and Betsy

Hello Folks....It's been soooo long. But I figured there was no better time to stop by then to let you all know we are getting ready to welcome a new pup to our home.

Her name is Betsy and crazy as it sounds she is coming from Sochi, Russia. We had been looking for a bit and applying but for one reason or another the dogs wouldn't work for us. So I was scrolling, scrolling ....scrolling through petfinder and up pops Betsy.

A prior dog that we were first hoping for had been a 3 legged BLK Lab/Corgi cross in Canada. The 3 legs just made her more special but they told me further in that she had epilepsy. Because I had promised Jim this pup would come healthy we said no.

I only knew I wanted a dog on the small side, but when searching my heart would skip when I saw any lab crosses. Betsy was a curtesey posting from a Dachshund rescue. So Betsy is a Dachshund/BLK Lab cross. I looked at my husband who had been concerned that a Canadian adoption being more complicated and said "So how about Russia?" Amazingly it has been easier then adopting in my area was proving to be, as the little ones tend to go faster....except the Chiuahuas. Someone really needs to help that breed. It isn't costing anymore either.

I am already in love with her and she isn't even here yet. They say she is very people oriented which will be so nice. Charlie is still a challenge although very much loved, he just has so much drive. In Charlie's eyes I come second to the squirrels, people walking by, ect. It will be nice to again have a dog that I am the most important thing to.

It's been 2 1/2 yrs. since we lost Maggie unexpectedly. Up until now I didn't want another dog. I just wanted Maggie back. Now we are ready to open ourselves up for more love. Hopefully she will have some Maggie qualities that so pulled at me when I saw her.

Now...that being said she is a goofy little girl. Here is a link that has pictures and a video.

    http://www.sochidogs.org/betsy

She is the little black one that is in front of the camera most of the time and stumbles off the wall.

I am just so excited and knew if I came here it would be like throwing a Betsy party. My family is visiting for the holiday and might look sideways at me if every other word out of my mouth was Betsy. She won't arrive until the 7th. It will be hard to wait that long, but I will keep myself busy with working on Charlie.

She was a courageous Boston Terrier who marched right on through diabetes, megaesophagus, and EPI until 14.
Lucky for both of us we found each other. I'd do it all again girly.

    what a cutie

i hope you can speak russian tara haha

finding a dog that is a bit needy is nice most smaller dogs are that way . jesse is kind of a cat. love is on her terms and she is quite independent but she will give an occasional snuggle

its kind of funny you talk about that other dog who has epilepsy i remember talking to you at one point where jesses seizures were on the increase and i was worried something else maybe coming but after that conversation with you her seizures have been on the decline and grateful for that

congrats on the new addition and hi and welcome to betsy

I love her Tara! and she is lucky to be getting you guys as her family. You definitely are due for a healthy dog. Russia... who'd have thought that would be fairly easy?

              Re: Hello and Betsy

Thanks folks. Luckily we will be busy wrapping things up on the Mtn. and I will try to get caught up on grooming so when she gets here it's all about Betsy. Otherwise it would be too hard to wait.

It's weird to adopt a dog without ever having met it. I did it with Ruby, but I wasn't as fearful of not being able to make a connection. As I get older I sometimes feel my time is running out and I really miss the connection I had with Maggie and the Shorthairs. With Charlie being young and Betsy also being young I know it will be a long time before we will get another dog.

So there is the fear, but there is also this weird feeling that I already know her....or know how it will be to be with her.

Anyway, I'll be sure to introduce her when she arrives.

                        Re: Hello and Betsy

Thanks Holli, I kept trying to post a picture.....finally said the heck with it.

I went and got Betsy's crate today. Between Charlie's big crate, hers and the guinea pig's cage, well some furniture had to go. I am thinking of trying to incorporate the kennels under a large homemade farmhouse table. There is a nice photo online of a kitchen island on top of two large homemade kennels but I don't have that much room in the kitchen.

Anyway I will pick Betsy up on Saturday and I just can't wait.....She will be flying into JFK on Friday and I am nervous and sad for her having to leave all her buddies. It will be nice to have the 3hr drive home alone with her. I will try to convey how that's the last transition and she can relax now.
