Re: My Monster Vinny

Ugghhh!! I am so frustrated! Just when I think I've got this figured out, Vinny doesn't cooperate! His numbers just stink and I'm at a loss, so I could really use some ideas or suggestions!

10-12-13 21 units with rice (tablespoon)
354 5:45 am fasting
364 7:45 am
342 10:00 am

10-8-13 21 units with rice (tablespoon)
183 7:30 am fasting
370 9:30 am
346 12:00 pm
337 2:00 pm
307 4:00 pm
267 5:30 pm food and insulin

10-4-13 20.5 units with rice
354 6:00 fasting
369 8:00 am
311 10:00 am
355 12:00 pm
276 5:10 pm
276 6:00 pm dinner and insulin
159 8:15 pm

9-29-13 20.5 units no rice
280 5:45 am Fasting
230 8 am
122 10 am
96 12:20 pm
82 1:20 pm (intervened)
147 2:30 pm
264 4:00 pm
274 6:00 pm

9-13-13 20 units added rice
224 5:45 am before breakfast and insulin
299 7:45
277 10:00
284 12:00 pm
237 2:45
241 4:50
262 6:00 before dinner and insulin

The numbers from today are no better than October 4 and he seemed to be doing better September 13 on 20 units. If I go further back, his curve on September 6 seems even to work. I just don't know what to do. Is the rice pushing up all his numbers? Should I try some pasta or something else? Should I drop him back to 20 without anything? Should I go up to 22? Help! :(

9-6-13 20 units no rice
313 5:30 am before food and insulin
308 8 am
264 10 am
308 12 pm
246 4:20 pm (missed 2 pm)
184 6 pm before food and insulin
267 8 pm

I really don't like him running in the 300's consistently. You would think since it's so consistent that just upping the dosage would work, but no, sadly it doesn't work that way. :(

I'm frustrated.

Re: My Monster Vinny

you do get a side by side comparison with and without the rice it it is quite dramatic

it is possible if you intervened at 10 am the numbers may have stayed flat and at a lower level for the rest of the day

thats how i approach it with jesse i gave up trying to find a food that would be timed with digestion to supply the sugar needed when insulin was at its strongest

now i just give a targeted snack at about 10 am lets the excess sugar be removed for the first couple hours after shot and when the snack is given the drop stops and she stays at the level for the rest of the day most times . her snack is a milk bone . we use an automatic dog feeder for her snack

intervening to early may act like the rice flat numbers but elevated .giving a snack to late will see a higher fasting like with your intervention in the afternoon

so you could play around with a targeted snack in that mid morning time but like i said timing does make a difference you could stick with the rice but you may have to increase the insulin a bit or try some other carb something that maybe a bit slower to digest

Hi Mel

Looks like the rice is raising his bg

I really like Vinnie, s numbers sept 29 curve 20.5 with no rice and no intervening with the 82 at 1:20.

If it were me i would drop the insulin back to 20.5
Drop the rice but
Add 1/2 tsp of fiber, benefiber mixed with water twice a day with meals. This will stop a drop and level him out during the day. I added a sprinkle of physillium husk to Riles food, it levelled his bg out and no drops

Test him for any low between 12pm and 2pm.

Your doing great

Mo

Mel,

You only been up at 21 units for two days, so I think you might possibly need to wait another couple of days before you change any insulin just to make sure. Then, it would seem there are several possibilities. You could go up a half unit and keep the rice. You could drop the rice and the dose back to where you were before the rice and add a snack of some kind during the day. You could try the fiber rather than the rice. Pasta will probably have the same effect the rice has so I wouldn't think that would better the situation.

Oh, Amy, I do see how you got there, but I change Vinny's dose last weekend. We've been at 21 since last Sunday morning. :) If I've learned anything, it's that certain amount of patience is required...which I have apparently run out of today! ;)

The rest of Vinny's curve for today is...
354
364
342
147 12:00 pm (200 pts!)
90 1:45 pm
124 3:00 pm
307 6:00 pm (added 1/2 teas of generic benefiber)

I'm going to continue to check him tonight.

Oh, sorry, I totally misread those dates and had it in my mind it had only been two days. It has been a long week.

Re: My Monster Vinny

Hey Mel, when I first added fiber to Riles diet, I waited 7 days for him to level out his bg, took that long. Added the the fiber to stop his drop 2 hours after food an injection . I saw his numbers flatten out,, no lows but I didnt have to raise his insulin.

Take out the rice you might have to lower Vinne, s insulin, rice is raising his bg for sure

Check for any low at the 12.oo mark, wait abit 7 days due a curve see where his numbers are adding the fiber

What your looking for is numbers high or low but numbers closer together, a flat curve ,

Your doing great, I still like the 20.5 units but lets see how the fiber works for no on the 21

Re: My Monster Vinny

Mo, 1/2 teas seems like a really small amount for the size dog Vinny is. (I am measuring it.) How is that amount determined or is it like the insulin, start low then work your way up?
Thanks for your input.
Mel

Re: My Monster Vinny

I started out sprinkling a little on his dry food added abit of water, swished it around. I didnt want him to get constipated.
2 hours later it brought his bg up. Then I just sprinkled more on to adjust his bg. So yes start with a small amount like you have, wait a few days and see how his bg flattens out.

Re: My Monster Vinny

I had forgotten how stressful having a puppy in the house can be! :o Up until yesterday, I had been concerned about how Vinny was dealing with it, but all seemed good. Spot checking him showed decent numbers.

Yesterday, the three dogs came inside and I could tell Vinny was stressed, so I tested him...77! I intervened with some Karo and a dog biscuit. Half an hour later he was at 66!!v   I intervened again, sent the other two dogs outside and sat with Vinny petting him until he calmed down. Checked him again and he was 99...on his way back up!

Looks like today might be worse since I can't send them outside without muddy dogs coming in. :( Any suggestions? I can't keep having Vinny on a rollercoaster!
