Lily’s on a mixture of 13 units of Novolin N and 3 units of Novolin R. She gets the R to flatten out her food spike. In her case, it has the added benefit of prolonging the life of her insulin to 12 hours.

Re: Help! Switching from Novilin N to Vetsulin

      Update on Maggie...

Her ear infection has completely cleared up. Her ear specialist is amazed and I am proud of us for winning that battle. We've weaned her off of 5 medications.

We've got her up to 11 units Vetsulin, she's at 44 lbs. Her vet wants to increase to 12. She also wants a urine sample to rule out any UTI that may be causing lack of response to vetsulin dosage increases. At her last curve, she bottomed out at around low 200s, stayed in 300s most of the time. She shot up in the late morning to low 400s. Still feeding her & giving insulin at 6a and 6p.

We were told today that she has a cracked tooth - going back to her vet to figure out a POA next week. Extraction and root canal were mentioned. That'll mean a month or two of trying to get her regulated with wanting to eat again. Extraction is shorter anesthesia, but longer healing - reverse for root canal.

She has a fluid filled cyst on her head that has returned after being drained (small, the size of a grape maybe). The vet mentioned wanting to remove it last time we drained it. She is due for a cataract check up in June... I feel overwhelmed again. Every time we get her health under control, I am bamboozled by some new issue.

All this time, I thought she was regulated. She was eating, playing, loving life. And now with the new vetsulin, it feels like we're at square one. Lord, give me strength.

Re: Help! Switching from Novilin N to Vetsulin

I am having the same problem with my Yukon on Vetsulin in regulating him. The only difference is Yukon's BG spikes into the 500-600's+ the first 4-6 hours of me feeding him and giving him 13 units of Vetsulin. It starts to go down and is usually about 150 by 5:30 p.m. - just in time for me to give him his dinner and insulin shot again. Lately it seems that in the morning it is in the 400's right before his breakfast & insulin so it has been staying high at night. He does have elevated hormones so I am not sure if that is what is causing all of the problems.

I am so discouraged I reached out to my vet to try to figure out a better insulin for him. He has been on the Vetsulin since September, 2018. Because of all the high number he is developing cataracts and is having a really hard time seeing. It breaks my heart.

I test his blood daily at least 4 times a day through urine and alpha trak. I have never had consistent numbers with the Vetsulin. I would love to have a day under 300 all day.

I would also love to hear if someone switched from Vetsulin to the Novolin 70/30 and if it made a difference.

Re: Help! Switching from Novilin N to Vetsulin

OMG..We are exhausted after 2 years of insulins..Now, we are trying to wait 20-30 minutes AFTER eating to give Vetsulin..I am trying to get guidance on using Novolin70/30..though someone somewhere believes it does not last as long as vetsulin. Suzie's results remain so screwed up, I am looking for a DVM with more education on the "workings" of insulins..since MERCK/VETSULIN is useless..Any great ideas welcome. Suzie remains asymptomatic (physical symptoms) and apparently that is all the DVM's care about...Keep in touch and will try Novolin 70/30 after next vial of vetsulin.
