  • Need help!! CRF in a young dog

My friends 18 mo old dog was just found to have been born with bad kidneys. She's currently at the specialist vet for the 2nd time getting iv treatments. Her BUN was 230 and get creatinine was 11 it's down to 8 now.

Do you guys know of another great board like this that we can join. I'm afraid they're running out of options

dont know of any group debbie to talk to wish i did

i know its difficult with this diagnosis for such a young pup

for me i use allot of common sense with anything i do with jesse. what food she eats how its prepared and how many to work with her challenges . just added saint johns wort for her anxiety

may look at a holistic approach if you cant find a medical formula it has worked for jesse because the alternative for her was not a very good option so i looked at it as we have nothing to loose . that little voice can be so helpful if you able to hear it

hope things improve and you find a solution that helps

I don't know either . My sister had a cocker she got from a backyard breeder that had to be put down very young. the vet told her he had the insides of a geriatric dog.

        it was so sad

I lost a little pug, Peanut, to renal failure this spring. She lived a yr past dx, and felt good and ate good till the very last.

I did a lot of reading and research and just could not find a cure. the only thing that helped her, and it helped big time, was Azodyl. It is a very potent probiotic, and was developed for exactly this, and will bring the BUN down significantly and quickly. It will not extend their life, but it enables them to enjoy the time that remains.

Sorry that there is not better news, but in people, barring dialysis, the only "cure" is transplant.

Thanks guys!! I knew you could help.

She's still with us and looks good overall. Her levels were still high and the vet sent her home and said to let her live her time out in peace. They gave her numerous medicines and also iv fluids to be administered at home.

Pretty much, as usual, the vet is no help is pretty much pushing for her to be put to sleep. My fiend is devastated and not ready to give up yet since she's so young.

She does shake some times and we aren't sure what that's from. She also isn't eating except oatmeal mixed with peanut butter.

We're looking into ordering the Azodyl and Epakatin.

What do you guys recommend for an appetite stimulant?

Thanks again. She has another appointment tomorrow but I'm sure the vet isn't going to give any options.

Piper was on Mirtazapine as an appetite stimulant. It definitely helped get her to eat.

I believe there is canine kidney forum online. You may want to check and see if they have
any new information that may be of help to you about supplements, diet, holistic helps or meds.
Also,Dog Aware.com has helpful information on CRF.
The writer of this site also takes emails.
She has done lots of research on canine health needs.
If I find anything else on CRF I will let you know too.
You are doing what I would do,learn as much as you can about CRF.
Take one day at a time and keep posting.
