I thought for certain I would need a break - but oh boy was I wrong. Our house was SO SO SO empty, and I had all this "time" on my hands that I didn't know what to do with and it made me miss my girls all the more. It was horrific.

    I needed a dog....stat.

Took 5 weeks and we had Karl.

There isn't a right or wrong answer - that is for sure. Very much an individual decision.

*fingers crossed it all works out!!!

He sounds like a sweet pup. I echo what the others have said - the timing is an individual decision.

We waited about 10 months before getting another dog. But we had a then 12 year old dog and two 17 year old cats still at home.

The 10 months gave us time to love on the older pets. Decker had a larger than life personality and we missed the high energy and chaos he had brought into our household. So we spent some time searching and found an 8 week old lab/shepherd mix. Thought maybe he'd be high energy with some herding traits - a couple of the things we really missed about Decker. Toby pup is now three and doesn't really display any herding traits and has an off switch that Decker never had. He's a great pup and has his own personality though and him being part of our family has given us something positive to focus on.

My father in law lives next door and adopted a lab mix rescue about a year ago. The dog comes to visit often. His name is Abbott but we often call him "Little Decker" as there is just something about that dog - he brings a lot of chaos into our house and has such a 'happy go lucky' attitude towards life. It's been three years since Decker has been gone and he is still missed. But I have to be honest and say there are days I'm happy to be able to take Abbott back to his own house. Funny how life works some times.

Any pup would be lucky to become a part of your family. Wishing you the best in whatever decision you make.

We lost one of our four in April last year. He left a big gap and after a few weeks we felt that we wanted to have another dog as we are used to managing with four and there are so many that are just desperate for homes.

I am also hopelessly influenced by the poem about "a dog's last will and testament" and a few weeks after losing Toby I started trawling dog rescues' websites. We found Rosie who looked a complete scruff as she had been neglected and was full of fleas, worms and (unknown to us) puppies. When we were flapping around dealing with the unexpected arrivals only four weeks after we took her in, I used to imagine Toby, looking down and having a giggle at what had replaced him in our little pack. She has brought us great joy and we have never regretted finding her so soon after losing Toby. (We did find homes for all the puppies though - you can have too much of a good thing!)

In the end though you have to see how you feel - but if it seems that the right dog has come along, it is very tempting to think that it is meant to be.

Thank you all, you've articulated so well what I just couldn't describe. It's not just missing Charlie, it's missing a furbaby in our home. After sleeping on it we are leaning towards yes. Our daughter has a play date with him on Saturday; my husband immediately asked if she would send a video! He's gone from lukewarm to highly probable; I think the thought of a rescue really resonated with him.

          We'll keep you posted!

Our family has grown! March 12 we rescued a 7 year old Yorkie Shihtzu mix. He came from a hoarding situation 😡. He had not been neutered and had a major dental 3 days before he joined us. He was a wee bit shy at first but now loves to play with the smaller neighborhood dogs (we have one of the few fenced yards). We named him Chuckie because we kept calling him Charlie. He is a definite lap dog and for a little guy loves to walk.

It is so very different to have a healthy dog and to be able to sleep through the night, this helps bring back the memories of the young Charlie.

Hope you and you fur babies are doing well, I've been catching up on threads tonight.
