Hello my friends......We've been absent for the last several months as we worked on our home in St. Augustine. We are now back up north enjoying the cool spring days. Spirit did very well over the winter in Florida. He is now 8-1/2 yrs old and almost 5 years as a sugar baby. He has slowed down quite a bit and our walks are slower and shorter so we've adjusted by increasing his insulin. He is now at 19 units day and night. I've come to the realization that his numbers are a bit higher as he gets older but he is still a happy goofy newfie and his blood work all still falls in the normal range. (we do a CBC once every 6 months.
I still try to keep him under 250 most of the day and he seems to be hovering in the 150 to 250 range. His last eye exam while in Florida showed no cataracts or glaucoma just a slight "blueing" which the eye specialist said is normal for a dog his age. At the start of this journey I would have NEVER guessed that he would still be with me almost 5 years diabetic and I know I've said it before, but it is all due to the support we received here when this all began. We still test about 5 times a day and he still comes running when he hears me pop the cap on the test strips....he truly LOVES his tests...or maybe the treat after the meter chimes.
I hope everyone is doing well and now that we are back home, I can check on the board more often. Talk to you soon.

Glad everything is going well . Uneventful is sometimes the best thing going with a diabetic pup
Jesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .

you have done such a great job keeping him regulated. my non-diabetic 13 year old poodle has the "bluing" going on in his eyes too. Our vet said the same thing, no sign of cataracts just old age.
welcome back up north! Hope we all have a lovely summer.
give Spirit an ear rub from us
Jenny: 6/6/2000 - 11/10/2014 She lived with diabetes and cushings for 3 1/2 years. She was one of a kind and we miss her.
Spirit ate at 5:30 a.m. today and got his shot (18.5) units. We walked for about 10 minutes and at 8:40 this morning he seemed a bit "odd" so I checked his BG and he was 239, he went to the door so I let him out and he threw up what seemed to be all of his breakfast. I let him relax a bit checked his BG again and it was still 239. Knowing he "lost" his meal, I offered him a milk bone and for the first time EVER he didn't want the treat.
So after 4-1/2 years diabetic this is a FIRST. Any suggestions other than keep checking his BG to make sure he doesn't drop too low? Should I try to give him a small meal in an hour or so if he will take it?
I have a feeling this is going to be one of those days..

Oh,sorry spirit isnt feeling good. With sissy,i just let her tummy rest and of course, check bg's. If he starts going low, would offer a milk bone, but sometimes just letting tummy rest works best... let us know how hes doing...

Thanks, my wife said the same thing....."don't keep offering food". If he won't eat his dinner tonight I remember that he will still need some "basil" insulin and I'm thinking about 1/3 rd of his normal shot...so about 6 units, does that sound about right?

They say 1/4 insulin with no food, 1/2 insulin with 1/2 food, etc. Wait and see how he does today.he might feel better tonight and eat some.i wouldnt push him if he doesnt eat all his dinner, then, just adjust insulin...
Good luck,i know how we worry about our babies.

Added thought. You could always try some cut up chicken and boiled rice if he doesnt want regular dinner...
Sissy will usually eat that right up.just plain boiled ( no skin ) and rice.i usually do about half and half...just for some calories if tummy is feeling poorly.we go through this periodically with pancreatitis. ..

I hate to be "disgusting", but when Annie vomits a meal (seems every 1-3 months) sometime after her meal & injection, I allow her to "clean-up" the mess herself. She seems to like the meal even more the second time
Never seems like I can determine the trigger that cause it.
Craig
ps. I avoid being kissed for a while afterwards.
Annie was an 18 pound Lhasa Apso that crossed the rainbow bridge on 10-5-17. She was nearly 17 years old and diabetic for 9½ years.
LOL, I tried that craig......he wouldn't touch it. I'm checking him every hour and again a weird event. At 10:00 a.m. he was 164 and at 11:00 a.m. he was 331? Now that is strange as I would of thought he would keep dropping as the day went on.
So if he doesn't eat I guess it will be about 4.5 units or so this evening.
BTW...he gets boiled chicken every day for dinner and he won't touch that either.

You've been very fortunate, Jim, ... with no puking for 4 1/2 years. I agree with the previous comments. Just let the tummy rest for a while, go with the 1/4 dose of insulin if he doesn't eat, and consider offering him some chicken mixed in his kibble to entice him.
Hoping it's "just one of those things", ... "a one time shot".

I've had success using a diced up hard boiled egg, or lean ground chuck to get mine to eat.
