  • Newly diagnosed Jack Russell Terrier with Diabetes

We have a 9 year old female JRT about 18 lbs. just diagnosed a month ago with diabetes. Started 4 units insulin once a day and vet changed it to 3 units twice a day. She gets agitated and whines and then can't climb two steps or jump up or down onto the furniture anymore. He legs shake also. Is this normal on the insulin?

hi and welcome to you and your jack russell terrier.
no it is not normal . a trip to the vet will help.
just starting insulin and to get your dog regulated you need a daily routine of testing. i tested at home saving some money. bought a dog glucose monitor..strips.lancets.

are you testing at home Mjen?

also a good quality food is recommended low fat and feed the recommended amount according to the feed guide.
then theres exercise to add into the equation.
test before food then feed inject insulin then walk. feeding and insulin every 12 hours.

when you get a minute let us know how your doing

My apologies for missing your question. If the blood sugar has been very high for a while, dogs can get diabetic neuropathy in their back legs. It is usually temporary and will dissipate when blood sugar levels are better.

How are things now? Better blood sugar?
