Re: FYI--FDA Finds Problems at Evanger's

Basically, until FDA reinspects their plant and is satisfied that the violations were corrected, they need to submit test results to FDA before any food can be shipped.

      http://www.fda.gov/ora/inspect_ref/i...lacfpt105.html

      http://www.fda.gov/ora/inspect_ref/i...lacfpt106.html

§108.12 - Manufacturing, processing or packing without a permit or in violation of a permit.

Once a processor receives the order that he needs to obtain a permit, he can continue to manufacture, process or pack product, although the product cannot be introduced or delivered for introduction into interstate commerce unless the firm obtains FDA's advance written approval. We do not give such approval until the processor provides an evaluation of the potential public health significance, of each code lot, conducted by a competent authority in accordance with procedures recognized as being adequate to detect any potential public health hazard. The processor can ship product interstate to a consolidation warehouse or other storage facility which is under their control.

No botulism was found in any of their products but the violations found on inspection were such that conditions were right for it to possibly occur.

Unfortunately, the company has not been keeping people up to date with regard to this; the last I saw there was no mention of any of it on their website. All we have to go by right now is that every bit of their canned food must be tested for botulism and those tests must be negative and submitted to FDA before it can leave their plant.

Mars Petcare US Issues Voluntary Recall

          http://www.petcare.mars.com/

          September 12, 2008

Today, Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of products manufactured at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. This voluntary recall only affects the United States.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The company stopped production at the Everson facility on July 29, 2008 when it was alerted of a possible link between dry pet food produced at the plant and two isolated cases of people infected with Salmonella Schwarzengrund.

Even though no direct link between product produced at Everson and human or pet illness has been made, Mars Petcare US is taking precautionary action to protect pets and their owners by announcing a voluntary recall of all products produced at the Everson facility beginning February 18, 2008 until July 29, 2008 when we stopped production.

The company is continuing to work collaboratively with the FDA to determine the nature and source of Salmonella Schwarzengrund at the Everson facility. Since it has not yet identified the source of the Salmonella Schwarzengrund at the Everson facility, Mars Petcare US does not plan to resume production out of a commitment to the safety of our pet owners and their pets, customers, and associates.

The top priority of Mars Petcare US has always been and continues to be the health and welfare of pets and their owners. Consumers can continue to have confidence in the quality and safety of the products produced at other Mars Petcare US facilities. Only those products which were produced at the Everson facility are impacted by the voluntary recall.

Many of the brands involved in the recall are national brands produced at multiple facilities. A chart for all products is below. For example, PEDIGREE® is manufactured in numerous facilities throughout the country, and Everson represents a very small portion of the manufacturing base – 2.7 percent of total PEDIGREE® production.

Mars Petcare US will work with retail customers to ensure that the recalled products are not on store shelves. These products should not be sold or fed to pets. In the event that consumers believe they have purchased products affected by this voluntary recall, they should return the product to the store where they purchased it for a full refund. Specific product details and other information can be found at www.petcare.mars.com

Please find recalled pet food UPC information below.
The products listed below are made at our Everson facility on behalf of a variety of retailers. All code dates, with the exception of PEDIGREE®, are listed in a similar format as noted below:

Ugh... Seems like there are familiar names from the Menu Foods Recall. Wasn't Ol' Roy involved then too?

Re: Mars Petcare US Issues Voluntary Recall

Mars did a VERY limited recall of Krasdale and Red Flannel--certain sizes only--a little more than a year ago from this plant. They did a similar one with only certain sizes of Ol' Roy from their TN plant (formerly Doane) shortly before that.

In all of this, it's the same strain of salmonella--found twice now at the PA plant (this year and last year), once at the TN plant last year and about a month ago, this strain of salmonella was reported at their CA in certain lots of Pedigree distributed in CA and NV.

Here's the CDC report regarding the outbreak at the PA plant last year.

              http://cdc.gov/salmonella/schwarzengrund.html

CDC's take then was that not enough of the questionable food had been recalled and it was responsible for the salmonella schwarzgrund spreading beyond where the Krasdale and Red Flannel were distributed:

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers that Mars Petcare US, Inc. has recalled two dry dog food products because of the potential contamination with Salmonella Schwarzengrund.

"The Mars Petcare US, based in Franklin, Tenn. is voluntarily recalling five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, and 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry food sold in Pennsylvania."

ACME voluntarily recalls Happy Tails and Shoppers Valu multi-flavored dog biscuit products

ACME is voluntarily recalling Happy Tails and Shoppers Valu multi-flavored dog biscuit products because they may contain peanut butter that has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The precautionary move follows a nationwide recall issued by Peanut Corporation of America of peanut butter and peanut paste produced in its Blakely, Ga., processing facility.

The products were sold at ACME stores. The identified items have not been directly linked to the salmonella outbreak. However, because the safety of customers, and in this case their pets, is a top priority and out of an abundance of caution, ACME has voluntarily recalled the products.

                    This product recall includes all:

                    Happy Tails Multi-Flavored Dog Biscuits, 26 ounces;
                    UPC No.: 41163-42406.

                    Happy Tails Multi-Flavored Dog Biscuits, 4 pounds;
                    UPC No.: 41163-42403.

Carolina Prime Pet Announces Nationwide Recall of Dog Treats

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Murphy, North Carolina – Jan. 27, 2009 – Carolina Prime Pet, a manufacturer and distributor of dog treats, is voluntarily recalling four of its dog treats that contain peanut butter made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste.

The recalled treats are sold at various retail establishments in the U.S. and Canada. Although Carolina Prime Pet is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure.

The recalled products include only the following types of Carolina Prime Pet treats in single unit packages with lot date codes between 081508 and 010909:

6" Beef Shank Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542007
2pk Hooves Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542000
4" Rawhide Bone Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542003
6" Rawhide Bone Peanut Butter, UPC 063725542005
6” Healthy Hide Beef Shank Peanut Butter, UPC 09109333479

Customers who purchased the recalled dog treats should discontinue use immediately, and return items to the purchase location for replacement or refund.

So you see that the company doesn't only deal with PetSmart; the earlier recalls for these products were for items purchased at either of the stores.

Link for first recall of these products--listed as PetSmart only.

Even though the date is January 23, this nationwide recall just "appeared" at FDA:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Deerfield Beach, Florida – Jan. 23, 2009 – Salix, a manufacturer of rawhide dog chew products, is voluntarily recalling its Healthy-hide Deli-wrap 3-Pack 5” Peanut Butter-Filled Rawhide dog treats that contain peanut butter made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). The voluntarily recalled peanut butter-filled rawhide treats are sold at PetSmart, Target and Wegmans Food Stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. Although Salix is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has issued this voluntary recall as a precautionary measure. The UPC of the voluntarily recalled product is 09109333354.

The product comes in a clear plastic bag with attached header card and the name Deli Wraps on the front. The original notice at this link named only PetSmart and Wegmans as stores selling it--not a word about Target.
