    Re: Mollie's Story

The exercise certainly could have caused the drop to 85. The 100 at 2:00 pm really doesn’t give you enough of a safety factor to compensate for a BG drop due to exercise or any other factor.

I think you have room to drop her insulin dose by .5 unit and then do another curve in 5 to 7 days. Her nadir should come up a bit and hopefully her fasting numbers and the rest of the curve will look good.

    You’re getting very close

      Re: Mollie's Story

      Hi,
The vet has recommended that I go back to using Humulin for Mollie, these were her numbers in June before switching to Novolin N, the absolute best that she has ever had.
We have gone up to 6 unit 2x a day, and backed slowly from 6 to 4 units. My vet consulted with a specialist and she also recommended switching back to Humulin at 4 units 2X a day which I will do beginning today.

      4 units of Humulin 2X a day
      6 8 10 12 2 4 6
      9-Jun 137 164 192 343 296 296 209

Her numbers since the switch have been all over the place, these are the results of 4 consecutive day tests

      23-Nov 453 592 579 312 453 579 312
      24-Nov 684 308 245 206 308 312 579 308
      25-Nov 558 493 369 297 301 147 199
      26-Nov 370 443 389 242 291 332 499

Has anyone else had a problem switching from Humulin to Novilin ? She does not have any underlying condition and was tested for pancreatitis and cushings. She does not exhibit any symptoms, negative for keytones, +1 for glucose in her urine, no excessive drinking or peeing.

Hoping that the return to Humulin will work for her but the expense is crazy. Yesterday, $81 for 3ml bottle of Humulin at Walgreens, Walmart does not carry the small bottle only the 10 ml for $161. Does anyone have a
suggestion for a less expensive place to buy Humulin?

Her diet has stayed the same 1/2 c of Hills w/d 1/4 c frozen green beans 2X a day 6 am and 6 PM I weigh and measure everything that she eats

the curve you posted on the 13th looked pretty good

my jesse has always been a bit erratic over her diabetic life .we switched her from novolin to humulin and back to novolin without a change in her regulation this was do to walmart switching there manufactures for there relion brand so we changed with them and most others at the time on the forum did also and i dont believe anyone switched back do to problems with the change

i dont think there is much to do with the price just have to hunt around and maybe find a discount

        hope the switch helps

I know I was so hopeful that we were on the right track after that curve and one week later back to hi 650 and low 0f 376 and since that time all over the place, very much like the ones that ZI posted today.

            Re: Mollie's Story

Don't recall anyone having big problems with switching from Humulin to Novolin, or vice versa. I'd try another vial of the Novolin before throwing in the towel on Novolin and start paying $161.00 for 10 ml of insulin instead of $24.88. Could there be an infection playing in the background??

              Re: Mollie's Story

I followed the advice of the vet and kept Mollie on Humulin for 1 month at 6 units 2X a day, there was no difference in the numbers between Novolin and Humulin. The vet advised me to keep her on Humulin however I did switch her back to Novolin and changed her food from Hills w/d canned to Hills w/d kibble, with 1/4 c of green beans and 1 tbsp of pumpkin 2X a day. She no longer cries and whines about two hours before her meals and has gained about 1 pound, so it appears that the food change is making a difference for her.

I would like some advice about raising the insulin 1/2 a unit to see if the fasting numbers will go down. She eats 2X a day, 6 AM and 6 PM with very little deviation from those times, and never more than 30 minutes.
Urine strips are consistently negative for ketones and +/- 100 for glucose
These are her numbers for the last 3 full 12 hour curves, it is not great but better than previous numbers.

              2/25/2018 459 413 338 184 271 244 246

I am very grateful for any and all advice, I read the posts daily but do not feel comfortable offering comments or advice to others at this point. She was diagnosed in April so it has been 10 months since the diagnosis and she has never maintained a consistent glucose level and nothing close to a dog without diabetes. My vet did say that she may never attain the glucose levels of a dog without diabetes so I am focusing on keeping her feeling well and not exhibiting any symptoms.

                Re: Mollie's Story

you got a bit of a problem raising the dose with the 133 and 134 on 2 of the curves lowest number .

What low number are you comfortable with ? You should have some history what a half unit increase will do as the curve looks fairly predictable . That may give you and idea if its doable . Now i have done quarter unit adjustments on jesse and have heard of people doing 1/8 adjustments

                  Re: Mollie's Story

I would wait a week or so without doing any changes and do another curve.

Miss Molly is in a good place under 250 for the majority part of the 12 hours.

her dose could be too much for a 10 lb dog. wait abit longer for the food change

How do you guys measure a half, quarter or eight unit?? I feel like I have a challenging time just getting it close to correct full unit in u100 syringes and I’m often not exactly on the nose.

It sometimes depends on the type of U-100 syringe. There are basically three physical size U-100 syringe: 100 unit, 50 unit and 30 unit maximum capacity. Most use the 30 unit max capacity because few dogs would ever require more than 30 units. 30 unit syringes, and I believe 50 unit syringes, have ˝ unit markings that make measuring ˝ unit easy. You can “eye ball” half way between the marks for 1/4 unit. The large 100 unit max capacity syringe only has full unit markings and would be harder to estimate 1/4 unit amounts.

Are you using 30 unit capacity syringes?

I’m using 50u (1/2” needle) and there are no half marks. The pharmacy didn’t have 30u with 1/2” or 5/16” needle lengths

You can order syringes online to get exactly the kind you want. I always used 31-gauge needled syringes with half unit marks made by BD. I had tried some Ulticare syringes but the plungers never felt right on them.

Jesse has used these same syringes and for us we do not need a prescription to get a box of a 100 . There was a time they would only give a bag of 10 without but that policy was discontinued

Now sometimes they may only have a specific gage at our walmart like 30 or 31. For jesse it doesnt matter which
