Hi my 11 year old Rottie Bella was diagnosed last week, her numbers were on 1 st check was 512, the vet gave her 25 units of Novilon N, rechecked dropped to 413, I picked her up at 5 that day she was at 412, he was no help on instruction, just told me to give her shots at 28 units in the thin area of her thighs, and do at feeding, now as soon as I touch her as she's eating she runs...he gave me zero instruction on getting and doing readings just to bring her in once a week, he's killing me in expenses, so far diagnosing and 12 cans of wd hills brand I am out 900.00, I am on a fixed income... Bella has stopped wetting her bed, carpet etc, the water drinking is way down she dies feel better, but every time it's shot time I want to throw up from stressing, help in all areas needed. Thank you all in advance...Bella had went from 140 lbs to 106

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
Welcome to you and Bella!
The injections probably don't really hurt her, just startles her. Try to make it "fun". Maybe have the syringe ready, but give her some hugs & rubs around the area you plan to inject for a few moments and then sneak in the syringe? Don't show your fear: these pups pickup on our emotions! I talk, sing and hum while blood testing and injecting. This way I don't hold my breath and show any (much) concern.
After the blood test & injection, I use to have her ball ready and throw it a few times. She lived to play ball. In fact, I'd say "test time!" And she would run to get her ball and bring it to me. I'd test, or inject, and throw the ball and she was a happy girl.
Just takes a while for her to get use to the injection. It will get better.

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
I am still new at this too, so it seems odd to be giving suggestions. Izzy was diagnosed just 5 weeks ago and her glucose readings only dripped after 3 weeks and they are still high. We give her injections immediately after she eats and offer her a treat (dried lamb lung) after the injections with lots of praise and hugs. I was petrified at first, but now it is second nature. You and Bella will get used to it. Now I have to work up the courage to test her blood glucose at home! Luckily you can go to this forum for advice and encouragement.Izzy's Mom - 11 years old, 24 pounds, diabetic since May, 2016, 12 units Humulin N every 12 hours; 1/2 cup Blue prescription k/s three times a day and a regular grain free greenie after dinner

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
Thank you!
Is there a less tender area to inject her? I think I am so stressed because of lack of knowing the what and how's , I did watch the video on the site and wow that dog was not in pain or cared it was received a shot. What about the food is there a better diet other then the 209 a month plus from the hills brand w d
Thank you!

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
As far as diets some just kept feeding the same before diabetes some enjoy a premium and sometimes basic commercial food my jesse is on a homemade diet partially raw
Now the prescription diets do have a track record as working well with blood sugar but not all the time and some dogs wont eat it
they say its best to keep the fat level lower to keep the pancreas from working to hard a problem diabetics may have
i inject on jesses backside maybe 6 to 8 inches off the tail on either side of the spine (stay far from the spinal area ) i tent loose skin and inject while shes eating
maybe doing some practice tenting just grab some skin from time to time give some praise . practice shots can be helpfulJesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
$209/month for Hills W/D? That's for how many cans? I'm paying around $31 for 12 cans at my vets, and sometimes you can go online to HillsPet.com and find coupons for $5 off a purchase. Here's the link for $5 off that you can print. http://www.hillspet.com/en/us/products/special-offers And, sometimes your vet may have coupons that are sent to them from the company.
I agree with Jesse in tenting up some skin on the low back/hip area to get her used to you doing that. You inject at the base of the tented skin on a slant. They really shouldn't feel anything, but each dog is different, I guess. And, it is scary in the beginning. I was horribly frightened the first few times I had to take care of my Gus. I had to learn quick because my hubby was going out of town and I had to know how to do it. If you're using Novolin, you should be using the shorter U-100 syringes, which is a lot easier to inject with.
Have you spoken with your vet and told them your concerns? They should have given you more instructions. I had to change vets in the beginning because mine just basically sent us home with insulin and food and a few syringes without any discussion about diabetes and all that goes along with it. He wasn't my original vet because my original vet was out sick for several weeks and I had to find a new one. So, I got a second opinion and am liking the one that I have now. She's very informative and takes time to explain things and listen to my concerns. This forum here has helped me know what what questions I should be asking. So, I would take a list of questions along with me in the beginning.
Take a deep breath. It does get easier - really, it does.Last edited by MomofGus; 07-25-2016, 06:19 PM.Gus - **Angel as of March 7, 2018"

Hills w/d, or other prescription foods, will be $$$ for a pup the size of Bella. Is 100 pounds a good weight for her (was 140 too heavy)? If you think she is OK around her current weight, you might look at foods that are suggested as "weight management". Weight management foods are usually higher fiber, and lower fat which is a good thing.
You do know about getting your Novolin-N from Walmart? Novolin-N is only $25/vial there opposed to $130+ from other pharmacies. Syringes are low cost there also.
You might want to look into home blood testing. There are videos on YouTube that show how easy home blood testing can be.

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
Where do you put her injections? Tonight I followed the video on line at the shoulder blades, it was not nearly as tramatizing to either of us. Then immediately after we played in the water, I did wait 15 minutes after feeding because she kept looking to see if I had that demon needle in my hand, I waited until she forgot about it...

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
Thank you! Bella has always been between 130 to 140 her parents were 175 and 205 all muscles, Bella is so thin now for a Rottie her size you can see and feel her ribs, the vet has me mixing the wet stew hill and dry she hates both, she has never been a big fan of chicken and that is all it comes in, I am adding 2 tablespoons of beef wet food to get her to eat it, she is showing sign of hip problems now, her back leg will go out from under her several times a day so less weight is better for that..

Craig, I did go to Walmart for the Meds, whew big price difference. I am going to do my best to get the meter to check her levels ASAP I can not continue the prices the vet is charging, I am ill with a brain tumor myself, but the care of my Bella will always come first

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
Thank you!
Bella is a big girl so the 12 cans are only 6 days, plus mixing it with the w d hills dry at 65 a bag, I was gulping big air when I was given the amount to pay, I will try the hip area, the neck tonight was nothing like where the vet told me to do in the thin area of her thighs, that's a very sensitive area. I am so grateful that I found this site, I'm sorry if I'm asking so many questions, but this is not my field of expertise and learn I must

Re: Rottweiler diagnosed last week I'm confused
Thank you!
I never fed her cheap unhealthy food and as she aged I switched to weight management senior, that was when the weight just fell off and she started throwing everything up, then a few weeks ago she started with massive intake of water and wetting herself, Bella is my 2nd Rottie the first I lost to pancreatic cancer at 8, my fear was feeding her the wrong food now, the vet stated she could only eat hills which is a challenge because she likes beef not chicken. I thank you for your advise and will work hard the injections not being so traumatic..

There may be places where she prefers. My Annie prefers getting injected on her right side, but sometimes twitches if I try her left side. As time goes by, you will likely need to move the injection site around a little. If you inject into the same spot over and over a hard spot may form under the skin (probably don't need to worry about this for a month or two).
