So here I am again, for those of you who may remember, I had a diabetic pug several years ago. Bella was memorable not only for her sweet nature, but for all the difficulties that came with her liver disease (CAH) and trying to manage and regulate the diabetes at the same time. she will be missed forever.
A few weeks ago, I rescued another diabetic pug. Emmitt was found in a shelter in another state in very bad shape. He required intensive care for a week before he could be moved to Texas. He had several seizures, his WBC was through the roof, and his BG was 582. He was moved to Texas when stabilized, and I took custody a few days later.
He is 11-12 yr old pug, and was on baytril and clindamycin, Novolin N 3U in am and 2U in pm. He weighs 20 lbs, and came with W/D glyco balance kibble and canned food. that is about all the history I have. Oh I forgot, the vet said he was "regulated"
And so it began. he is the sweetest guy, does not mind testing at all, never feels the insulin shot and eats well.....anything he can get his little jaws on.
First week was pretty erratic, but at least he follows a pattern of sorts. Of course the dose of insulin has had to be adjusted, and I have changed over half of his food to Orijen, grain free, higher protein, and will continue to change that as I have never been a Hills fan. the changes in the food have not affected his BG, I have kept the same caloric value.
the problem is this, and I knew if anyone could explain it, Natalie could. Whilst his numbers are within range, his curve has me flummoxed.
I have done curves every other day trying to figure this out... this is pretty much the median result, some days a bit higher and some a bit lower.
6am 80-90 food 3.5U
8am 140-150
10am 160-180
12 noon 160
2pm 110-120
4pm 100-110
6pm 70-80 food 3.5U
evening curve is close to the same, except I give a small snack about 11pm (bedtime) as I cannot sleep with him under 100! But by morning there hs is again. thougt he might be honeymooning, but when I bring his insulin down more than 1/2 U , his numbers skyrocket.
I cannot find any info on a reverse curve (inverse?)...He is feeling wonderful, skips around the yard with our other 10 rescue pugs, barks for his meals, maybe I should leave well enough alone?
I am interested to see if anyone has experienced something like this>
Thanks, sorry this is so long. Joan & Emmitt
