Wow, Natalie that must have been a very scary experience.
When we moved to the country 4 years ago, my husband noticed that there are a lot more big dogs allowed to roam around loose and he asked a few people how he could defend our 2 little westies. Their answer was to get a cattle prod. I don't really know how it work but apparently it could neutralize an animal in the attack. We didn't but I just thought I'd mention it.
Now I don't know what a dog owner with a cattle prod would look like in California
