  • Can they lose their eyesight even after cataract surgery?

    hi all,

Hope you're all doing well. I haven't been on this thread for a while since Mochi seemed to be doing very consistently well with his blood sugar these past 7months. However, things took a turn today...his blood sugar went up to 21.4mmol (385mg) around 3pm and then right before dinner it was up to 29 (520). He also seemed like he was low on energy and didn't want to eat all his food.

Besides that I noticed he is losing his vision...he injured his good eye last year pricking it on a rose bush and I heard he will never see clear on that eye again..however I notice his vision getting worse and worse. I was just wondering if this is normal?...

Jesse's eyesight and even her hearing has declined as she got older . She does not have diabetic cataracts but its just part of getting older as things wear out .

She needs a bit more help with things which is understandable but she is still jesse and happy

We just adapt when a change occurs and thats ok

Thank you guys for getting back to me!

Mochi's blood sugar has gotten back to normal but for some reason it seems like his vision is decreasing quite fast...im getting really worried.
He's been on azopt eye drops for a while because his eye pressure numbers are higher than the normal..im wondering if that's causing it to get worse..

          • Pray for mochi..

            Hello..

I decided to msg this group for some support. Mochi has not been feeling well and I've noticed a change in his attitude with eating his meal a few weeks ago. It slowly got worse and worse..he loves food and would eat everything and anything so noticing his lost of interest in food got me really worried. At first I thought it was a stomach upset..he was constantly eating grass and I hear his stomach gargle so much.
I didnt believe anything was serious since he had his blood tested just a month ago..but he had his blood tested again and now it shows that his liver enzymes are super high..my vet got back only half the blood work so we're still waiting for the pancreas test to be back but he is certain that the pancreas is high too..im living this night mare again...
I dont know what I've done wrong when I've been super consistent with him. Hes been eating the same diet for 3 years almost and his blood sugar has been consistent.
I'm just in shock and confusion to why this is happening..
I will be bringing him into the vet all day tomorrow to get continuous iv fluid and he will also be needing an ultrasound.

Please pray for him everyone..I just lost my other dog last year and I am not ready to lose Mochi..
Has anyone been in this situation that can give me any advice???..I've been panicking and not able to eat..im so worried..

I will. I had a dog go into liver failure 30 years ago. I hope there are more treatments available now.

Jesse has had her struggles with her digestive system from blood in her stools , loose and also diarrhea . We never tested for what was occurring which some may not agree with but we have developed strategies that got her back on track from a daily dose of milk thistle for the last few years . I have always thought with jesses food to be something that could be easily digested . Also her feeding of just one meal a day came along the lines to simplify digestion thinking one meal would give her digestive system a break . Lately she also was struggling eating her food so I reduced the amount she was getting and grind her entire homemade diet in a food processor to make it easier for digestion . She has no hard type food in her diet . Even her milk bone treat I crush it and drizzle milk on it to soften it up and this recent adaptation to her meal and snack has perked her back up in terms of eating . Her poohs are good which I closely monitor. I realize jesse is an old girl and we are not planning any major medical intervention at her age . We Just go with simple common sense approaches and as long as she is happy and not severely struggling for a specific amount of time we are good and a happy dogs life continues . I do understand eventually the bag of tricks will end and that's ok when that time comes but I dont know when that will be so we take it day by day and not worry to much about what might be . Always a prayer for you and Mochi . You 2 have done a wonderful job together managing the challenges that may pop up .

Mochi's got pancreatitis thats also causing the liver to have problems. Hes been hospitalized today to get continuous fluids and will be getting an ultrasound done. I'm so nervous because the last time this ultrasound specialist did an ultrasound on my other dog that passed he gave me bad news after bad news..

I dont understand what caused this problem with his pancreas and liver all within a month..my head has been going in circles thinking what caused it?..his diet has been a dry low fat kibble. He's been doing so well with his blood sugar too so im not quite sure what could've caused this..

Diabetic dogs just seem to be prone to pancreatitis . Jesse had it originally but knock on wood we have avoided it . Its all a mystery there are theories why but nothing written in stone . It sounds like you caught it early and that is so important . Things might be out of whack a bit so more testing of blood sugar maybe helpful .

Mochi was hospitalized today to get IV fluids. They gave him some strong pain killer thats an opioid called Buprenorphine. The ultrasound specialist ended up canceling on us last minute so now I have to bring him back to the vet tomorrow all over again. He seemed traumatized from today..he came home a totally different dog..he wouldn't even eat..He has been eating fine this morning and the days before and then once he came home from the vet he just didn't want to eat at all..i fed him the chicken treats he likes to eat and my dad hand fed him a couple spoons of the wet food. We ended up giving less insulin since he ate so little.
He didn't even want to go for a walk with us..

Mochi's never been like this before..so it worries me that taking him to the vet is destroying him even faster...

What do you guys usually do when your dogs wont eat?...Mochi is never a picky eater and he loves food...so we never had the problem with giving him food and insulin...do you guys give your dogs less insulin if they don't eat? or no insulin at all?
He has to be on a strict low fat diet because of his high triglycerides.

They can have between one quarter and one half of their normal insulin dose with no food.

Base how much you give on their blood sugar. If it's pretty high, you can likely safely give half the normal dose. If it's lower... under 300, start with one quarter of the dose and see what effect that has.

Pancreatitis is painful and when jesse had it she did not eat solid food for a week . She stayed on fluids till the end of her ten stay at hospital . In a way food is the enemy but others have a different approach

For me with jesse if she doesnt want to eat I do not force feed her . I have withheld food 24 hours on occasion from diarrhea , no appetite or just not feeling well

Its really not a big deal in the short term . Another factor is a dog can equate food to pain after the pancreas has healed so you don't want to have a negative experience with eating and have a picky eater afterwards . It can be a slow process so adjusting insulin to how much is consumed maybe needed

Mochi's pancreatitis is quite severe shown on the blood work. But he still is willing to eat his dinner. Mornings are the toughest..my dad has to hand feed him.
We've been injecting sub q fluids under Mochis skin now for the past 3 days but I heard Iv is a lot better. On Monday when he stayed at the vet all day he seemed very stressed...I dont want to keep him at the vet all day for so many days straight and its very expensive.

What do you think I should do with Mochi's case? It seems like his pancreas was slowly flarring up more and more since the beginning of November. After the hospital stay on Monday he doesn't show any interest in wanting to eat.. he was still eating fine right before being hospitalized.

My Phoenix (who was not a diabetic) had kidney failure and almost died from it as her creatinine levels got entirely too high. She had to be hospitalized for almost a week because the vet needed to flush out her kidneys and put her on intravenous fluids with medications, etc. trying to get her creatinine levels to drop.

When I brought her home, they had me give her 300 ml of sub q fluids with electrolytes once a day, and said she might live for 2 weeks, even on the fluids, as her creatinine levels were not coming down sufficiently for her kidneys to continue functioning.

However, she kept doing better and better as I gave her the daily sub q fluids. The vet was amazed. He told her that she’d made a liar out of him! Each week, I’d go in for bloodwork and her creatinine levels were lower. Her levels finally dropped to 2.3 and held there, and once a week visits to the vet for bloodwork became once a month or so. Since her kidneys were damaged, she still needed to be on the daily sub q fluids. If no one knew Phoenix was on fluids, they wouldn’t know anything was wrong with her as acted like her normal self again. She was able to have a wonderful quality life for almost a year more – months I will always be grateful for.

I know pancreatitis and kidney failure are totally different things, but my experience with giving Phoenix sub q fluids was the best thing I could have done for her. It kept me from having to continuously go to the vet for them to reset the intravenous catheter, which was traumatic. Giving sub q fluids was much easier to do at home and worked really well for us.

I hope Mochi feels better soon.
