  • My sister's dog recently diagnosed with diabetes

My sister's jack russel was diagnosed with diabetes about 3 weeks ago. The dog has gone from about 22 lbs to 12 lbs. He is a stocky but short jack russel. He use to be a powerful looking dog now he is skin and bones. He is about 14 yrs old and has lost site in one eye.

They put him on Novilin 4 units twice a day. I believe she upped that by 1/2 unit.

I think the biggest problem for them is his diet. I read he should have about 400 calories but they feel so bad for him because he is so hungry that they give him more. They probably give him as much food as I give Monkey. They saw him eating his own doggy do (no real good word for that). Her husband said he would not let him go that hungry. I tried to tell them that shortly it would let up some if they could get closer to regulating him.

The poor dog looks like a bag of bones. Monkey looked bad but never that bad. I think he could make a good come-back if he was regulated.

If my sister joins the board please give her lots of encouragement. She is trying I have to give her credit for that. Her jack russel name is Bandit. Once again I don't know if her vet's office is giving her the best advice considering the dog's condition. They told her not to change his food which consisted of table scraps and canned Alpo and treats that I know had sugar in them. With Monk being on a different type of insulin I was not sure the best diet for him.

Ya that vet is an idiot, saying table scraps and canned alpo, its hard to make someone understand that their dog cannot eat that way anymore, they should realize the dog needs insulin shots for a reason.

You could mention easily that they could lose their dog

I hope your sister makes it to the boards with Bandit and I know how bad you must feel

It is good to hear that they've started him on insulin. Do you know if the vet is doing much monitoring of how things are going?

They do want to see him every week. He did gain a pound this week. They upped his insulin. They did a BG on him at 4pm but my brother in law did not know what it was just that the vet said it was still a little high but who knows how to interpret that.

Is Novolin (Novilin N I think) always real cloudy? I am use to Lantus which is so very clear.

Yup. NPH should be cloudy and needs to be gently mixed before being drawn.

            Hi There,

I was so sad to read about your sister's dog. I sure hope that she comes here to get some help. It sounds as though she needs it! Little Bandit needs it, too!
