  • Izzy is at peace

Meet Izzy, an adorable little Yorkie we found through a local Yorkie and Small Dog Rescue group (YSDR).

We decided we were ready for another little one in the house, so we began searching non-kill animal shelters and found an organization an hour away that seemed like a good fit.

Izzy's story (as far as we know):

She was found on the side of a freeway last April. Her hair was matted, paws were bald and infected from biting and chewing them (they think). She was taken to a shelter where she would have been put down "due to old age" but the woman who found her knew of YSDR. She contacted them and they took over Izzy's vet care. They paid for her shots and heartworm test, which was negative, dental and antibiotics for her feet--basically nursing her back to health. The first shelter estimated her age at 6 1/2, but we think she's older.

After being with a foster Mom for a while, Izzy was adopted by a family in May 2010. They returned her to YSDR in September because they thought their daughter was allergic to her...after having her shaved ! Her feet were treated again by YSDR and she was placed with a foster Mom. A synopsis appears at http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17887545 with a pic taken about that same time. They said she had a cataract in her right eye, but we think there is something going on with both eyes.

Her coat is filling in nicely, but we notice she still licks her paws and chews her toenails when anxious. She's very friendly and already housebroken. She will sit on command and we found out by "accident" that she will shake hands! We have an appointment with a canine eye specialist this coming Thursday; we'll know more about her eyes next week.

We are fostering her until all health issues have been addressed and treated. (And we hope to be her furever home.)

P.S. Thanks to whomever added the pic to this post!

You are so-o-o-o right, Gail. The wee one already has each of us wrapped around her dew claws!

BTW, my daughter is home this weekend and has spoiled Izzy even more than I did. She dotes on her, and Izzy really eats it up.

                  Oh, Mary and Leah,

I'm SO glad you were able to get a canine companion. Myself, I don't survive without one!

Izzy is totally adorable - not only cute, but she also has a great dignity in her looks. I really hope things work out so you can adopt her permanently.

I'll be watching for your updates!

                  Love, hugs, licks and wags,

                        Re: A New Canine Companion!

A great big thanks to everyone for your comments and well-wishes.

We have the eye appointment this week, and that's a big concern. If there is something they can do to help her vision, YSDR will fund the surgery. They will choose the eye which is most likely to benefit. We will have to wait for donations unless the cost is minimal. Since we don't know what has caused the problem, it is difficult to know what might happen.

One behavioral concern that we have discovered: she is not completely housebroken. A friend who is a dog trainer says she thinks it is not anxiety related since she will pee outside most of the time and has held it for up to ten hours overnight. She is not trained to a pee pad. Poop--she has always gone outside so far.

The trainer also told us she suspects Izzy knows more commands, and will work with her for an hour to find out what she already knows. We found with Ruffles that once we got basic commands under control, unwanted behaviors stopped without direct confrontation. I'm hoping that will happen with Izzy, too. We can afford one hour's consultation, so we're hoping to find out how to become the "top dog" (alpha) in her world.

                        Mary

                          Re: A New Canine Companion!

                          Hey, MaryLea,

About the failures in house-training, I had that with Camellia. It took me till a couple of weeks ago to get that worked out with her. I put on NO pressures. Just cleaned up when she had an accident, and made sure to take her out every few hours, and rewarded every success outside. It helps to take the dog to the same place each time.

That's about four MONTHS it took me to get the job done, and it meant watching Camellia carefully at times she was likely to need to go. She's so thrifty that I was taking her out a lot more than she needed.

Now, about top-dog, or alpha, that is a myth that's been blown to bits, as the paradigm of alpha-ness, or dominance, has been widely debunked by knowledgeable trainers.

If you go to my links page:

                          http://www.coherentdog.org/links.php

the first book on the list:

The 100 Silliest Things People Say About Dogs

will be very helpful to you. There's some stuff in there one must take with a grain of salt.

But Semyonova does a great job of explaining how things really work.

For a less detailed approach, more general, but extremely useful, study the works of Turid Rugaas, also listed on that links page. Rugaas is all over my site, for good reason!

It can be truly astounding, how stresses of change put a dog off-kilter, and I'd estimate the changes Izzy has experienced are at least partly responsible for her failures in house-training.

Keeping her stress-levels as low as you can will also help with her adaptation and successes in accomplishing useful change.

Oh, do have fun with Izzy!

                            Re: A New Canine Companion!

I think my daughter being home had alot to do with it, too. One more change (stress) for Izzy to handle.

Good news is: they love each other! so we'll keep working on it one way or another. We had Ruffles trained professionally, then we were taught to use the same commands and signals. Worked very well. Unfortunately, this time we cannot afford that route.

I used that term (top-dog, or alpha), but the trainer did not. She (the trainer) is very experienced and feels Izzy knows alot we haven't discovered yet, but thinks she can figure it out fairly quickly.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll check out your links. I can tell I need to do alot of reading!

                              Re: A New Canine Companion!

What a beautiful little face! Congratulations!!

Does Izzy know how to ask you to let her out to go?

That was the problem with Jack. He'd been kept in a kitchen 12 hours a day with his previous family and had to go to the bathroom there so he never learned to "ask" to go out. His signals weren't obvious. So we took him out periodically and rewarded him and eventually he kind of learned to ask and we got better at reading his requests and also knowing his routine.

I still "keep track" of when he last pooped so I have a pretty good idea of when he will need to go again.

You can teach them to touch their nose to a bell hanging from the door to the yard as a request to go out.

And of course praise the heck out of a successful "delivery." Poop in the yard was a real party around here for a while!
