I have been doing research and am finding that people have been opting out of vaccinations when their dog became diabetic. As I would read they said because the brochures on vaccines states only give to Healthy Dogs. Who still vacinates thier Diabetic pets? If you do which vaccines do you give?

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
that's a difficult question to answer some states require a rabies vaccine and very difficult to get an exception
my jesse was very sick at the beginning and is much better now i have not returned to vaccinations as of yet and i do have mixed emotions both ways
it may depend on how much your pup is out and about and around other dogs and wild areas if the potential for getting some of these diseases without vaccination is greater than the risk of the vaccination itself may give you a direction
maybe you can pick and choose what may apply to your pup depending on the circumstances
you can also titer a previous vaccination to see if enough antibodies are present to not have a need for a vaccinationJesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . The last visit that we had to the vet, I had Abby titer. It is against the law where we live to NOT get a rabies shot... however, for the others I opted out, but ensured that she still had the Antibodies, which she did.Barb & Abby 12/24/1999-12/31/2013 ~ dx 5/10/2011 ~ Forever in my heart ~

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
I only do rabies and bordatella(required by my vet for boarding/grooming) The last time Maggie got the lyme disease vaccination, she got really sick and it made her sore. We just don't have alot of lyme disease around here. I would be sure to look at the diseases that are prevalent in your area. Your vet should have a chart with the concentrations of outbreaks of various diseases. Also, Maggie is older - I had no problem when she was younger but she is just too old to cause her any more misery than necessary.Maggie - 15 1/2 y/o JRT diagnosed 9/2007, Angel status on 6/20/16. Her mantra was never give up but her body couldn't keep up with her spirit. Someday, baby.......

Bogies vaccinations have not come due yet since he has been diagnosed with diabetes... But I have decided he will get a titer done to be sure he has enough antibodies since his immune system isn’t what it use to be…
I am not sure about the Rabies, I live in California so I have to look into that one.

I gave my dog all of the vaccines the vet told me I needed - but I did them at home, ordered them from Foster and Smith. I'm sure she's over vaccinated, but we do have a few things that go around here. She seemed to handle it just fine.Zoe: 12 yr old Black Lab/shepherd mix. Diagnosed 6/1/11. Currently on 15 units Novolin NPH 2x day, and hopefully as close to regulated as possible. Feeding merrick Grain Free Salmon and Sweet Potato. Weight 63lbs.

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
We did not eliminate vaccinations for Chris until he was very frail from problems unrelated to his diabetes. The diabetes is a chronic condition more than an acute health crisis. Managed well, it does not have much if any impact on long-term health. So for young dogs especially, lack of protection from diseases could pose a much bigger threat than the diabetes.

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
Decker received a full round of vaccinations when his diabetes was diagnosed. His appointment was scheduled for routine vaccinations. Two days after scheduling the appointment and a few days before the appointment is when the urination accidents started. His rabies was good for three years.
After his hypothyroidism was diagnosed his thyroid specialist did recommend that he not receive any further vaccinations. He was going on nine years old and had multiple auto immune diagnosis at the time. I'd have to look back at his records but I know my non-diabetic boy also received the same vaccinations as Decker did - they were both scheduled for the routine vaccinations when Decker's diabetes was diagnosed. Kinser received a round of vaccinations in November 2012 that our GP vet never mentioned Decker was due for.Last edited by momofdecker; 02-18-2013, 07:47 PM.Holli & Decker // diagnosed November 5th, 2011 // Journeyed to the bridge January 26th, 2013, surrounded by his family at home // 9 years old // Levemir insulin // Hypothyroid // C1-C5 cervical spinal lesion // weight 87 lbs // Run with the wind my sweet boy. Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
Jenny's Cushings & Diabetes diagnoses came within 2 months of each other. Her vet was fine with not vaccinating her as she is mostly an indoor dog.
She is around other dogs at the groomer so I asked for the bordatella vaccine and for the first time he tried the sinus spray thinking it would be easier on her. WRONG. She got kennel cough. And gave it to my other dog who was vaccinated at the same time. Took weeks to get over.
This October when we went on a road trip I got her all of her vaccines since we were crossing state lines. no problems but I think she was less frail this fall than she was a year ago.
JudiJenny: 6/6/2000 - 11/10/2014 She lived with diabetes and cushings for 3 1/2 years. She was one of a kind and we miss her.

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
Jake did not receive his vaccinations in January only because of the lyme disease. He was still under treatment for it. I will make sure he gets his shots the next time we go in for a blood sugar check. We live on 70 acres and have fox, coyote, bear and many other types of wild life. I had a 12 week lab die of parvo. She was due for her third shot when she came down with it. I never want to take a chance of another dog coming down with it.

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
Hmmm I didn't know that vaccines could be a problem. I've always had Connor up to date on everything. He is due for a rabies shot this spring and I know he'll get that, we just found another rabid bat yesterday here on Cape Cod.
An acquaintance of mine died last January from a bat bite, the bat was rabid and he didn't realize he was bit (was chasing it out of house). So that's a given. My house abuts conservation and salt marsh and we have tons of wildlife here, coyotes every day.

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
CJ had all his vacinations as normal in January - rabies etc and he was fine - did not affect him at all or his BG levels. I suppose it depends on each situation and every dog is different. I have to keep CJ's up to date or he cannot travel with us.Anne-Marie and CJ Westie , Born 13 Jan 2004, dx May 2012, Weight 9.5kg, 6 iu Caninsulin Twice daily. Mixture of food - baby formula and mixture of chicken and vegetables . 4-6 feeds a day due to pancreatitis which is under control.

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
Thanks for all the responses. I have been doing research studies and have been reading that some shots actually can cause more issues. I had a friend who had a dog come down with lepto right after having the shot, I heard from many people that the lepto only works for the first 2 weeks. I do agree with the parvo shot but am thinking about opting out of some other shots. I am looking into taking him to see a holistic vet that lives close by. I have read about her and she has gotten some dogs, I know every case is different, off of insulin by doing raw diets and opting out of vaccines and a few other things. So I may have her look at my boy. He went to his first glocosamine curve on 2/18/2013 and had to up his insulin. His highest was 459 and his lowest was 342. so we are now up to 15 units. He did not eat for the vets so they couldn't get the last check in. I ordered the alphatrak2 a few days ago and should receive that within the next few days. this way I can do them at home and hope they will be slightly lowered seeing he will be more comfortable. Also this way when we go on vacation we take him with us and do lots of hiking so I am able to check him while we are out so he doesn't get too low.

Re: If your dog is diabetic do you vacinate?
I mentioned in my post.... but titering is a very good way to determine if they NEED the vaccination. This measures the amount of antibodies that are in the body.
I think that vaccinations are a good thing, but I also believe that over vaccinations are a bad thing... and perhaps where some of the bad publicity is given for vaccinations.
Just thought I would clarify my other post, in case no one knows what titering is.Barb & Abby 12/24/1999-12/31/2013 ~ dx 5/10/2011 ~ Forever in my heart ~

I draw a big red flag on vets that say they've gotten dogs off of insulin. Dogs are akin to Type 1 diabetics in that the beta cells of the pancreas die and are no longer able to produce insulin.
There are occasional cases where an unspayed dog goes into a sort of gestational diabetes, which can be transient after their heat cycle. Or, a dog that has an underlying reason for the diabetes (such as tumor, etc) that is affecting the pancreas' insulin production.
Cats, on the other hand, are more like Type 2 diabetics that are insulin resistant, and in some cases can start producing insulin again.
Also watch for those that will tell you, by switching to this or that, they can reduce the amount of insulin your dog is on. IMO, a dog needs the amount of insulin that it needs. As long as it is balanced, the amount is inconsequential.
My dog was on a raw diet, was not vacinated following her diagnosis (prior to that was rabies only after her puppy shots, though I ran titers on her), and always needed insulin.
I realize every dog is different. But that being said, do exercise caution and ask a ton of questions about the specific circumstances in a dog that has come off of insulin. I believe in the holistic community. But just like conventional education, there are those that subscribe to curative effects that can waste valuable time in finding regulation.
My two cents worth
