Started the switch to Humulin 70/30 today from the previous mixing of Novolin "N" and "R". Just to remind everyone, Annie had usually been getting 6¼ iu of "N" and 3 iu of "R" mixed together. She usually stayed within the 90 - 220 range, mostly in the low to mid 100s. I decided to try the pre-mixed Humulin (ReliOn) 70/30 to save the cost of the second vial and to prevent any mistake in measuring the two different insulins.

I replaced the 6¼iu "N" + 3iu "R" = 9¼iu total, with 8iu of Humulin 70/30. The ratio is just about the same.

Here is todays (12-3-10) results:

8AM = 211, fed and injected 8iu
12N = 73, no action because I figured the "R" component was about done.
1PM = 97
4PM = 92
6PM = 204
8PM = 183, fed and injected 7½iu
11P = 125

Actions taken at 8PM. Lowered dose to 7½iu. Instead of injecting immediately after eating, I waited 15 minutes to allow the food to get a bit of a head start. Gave half a "cookie" to possibly raise the early BGs. Will try to test around 11PM.

I'd give a treat about now or some more kibble, those 73-97-92 are a bit low plus your are seeing a 125 4 hrs later and the N may be in its peak or starting to peak, I'd check bg again if you can. The N is still working very slowly from the AM shot. Some insulin does remain in their system after 12 hrs, just a little but at times it matters.

Thanks for the comment, but I think I'm pretty happy with the 11PM reading of 125. I believe the "R" component of the 70/30 is just about done and Annie will rise a little from here. I've got to be up a little after 3AM (about to take a 3½ hour nap) and will check again then.

No doubt you are right, I've never used R with N, the N is probably kicking in now.

I'll take a few tests today (12-4) and post them, along with my actions:

8AM = 261, fed and 7¾ units


Comments: Increased to 7¾. ¼iu made a difference before using the Novolin, so not surprised that ¼iu makes a difference now. Possibly should have stayed with 7½ for a few days, but I misplaced my "patience hat" Injected right after eating, no delay. Didn't want to give the half cookie, but she was doing her "happy cookie dance" in front of the cupboard - couldn't say no.

We did 7¾ this morning and she stayed in the 200s. Gave 8 units at 8PM and plan to do a test in about 30 minutes (+3).

Maybe she will need a skinny 8 units instead of a full 8. But it's a little nerve-wracking to have to work in such small increments where one loose air bubble could affect the dose.

Is this a good procedure? If I want to inject 8 units, I draw 10 units into the syringe, wait a few seconds, and then push the plunger up to push the 2 units / air back into the vial.

I think so. I always overfilled the syringe and then brough it down to the right level. Sometimes I filled it and expelled all of it to expel the air with it and then drew the insulin to the right amount.

I had it easier, though, cuz I used R only so didn't have to mix it. I always did roll it anyway but didn't really need it. I think air bubble are more common in suspensions.
