Jack - NO FOX-TAILS! Horrid things!

Good luck tomorrow; I'll be eagerly awaiting your report, Natalie.

Phone line problems are limiting my access a bit (not completely), but I'll still check in several times a day!

Sorry to be slow to post. I got the vet's call late and didn't get back to the computer.

We picked up Jack about 3:30. They used sedation instead of anesthesia but he's been pretty groggy all evening plus he's had a bit of soft stools tonight and he has been mostly sleeping.

Finally heard from the vet around 7:30 or so - he had had time only to give the x-rays a quick glance but didn't see any problems at all in the ankle, knee, leg, or hips. There are some additional discs that look like they might have problems and he says his gut feeling is that it's his back that hurts. He's going to do a more careful review tomorrow and will call me again only if he sees something he didn't see before.

Which means we probably are headed for the MRI if we want to be sure there isn't something we can do for him besides pain meds.

Poor Jack is so tired. I hope he perks up tomorrow.

Although he did come out of his fog long enough to tear over to the patio door when the terriers barked! So he's in there.

Oh, I almost forgot. Despite being quite groggy and unsteady on his feet, he stood up in the back of the car looking out the windows all the way home - with an occasional list sideways.... I don't think there's a chance in heck we will ever get him to lie down in the car.

Maybe you WILL never get Jack to lie down in the car. My Kwali - well, I thought the same, but it turned out that eventually, when she knew we were on the way home, she sometimes lay down. That was many years after she became my dog, though.

Border Collies and Terriers aren't quite the same; haha!

Glad to have any news from you, Natalie; thanks for the update. I'm sure you'll keep us posted. You must be tired, too; go get some sleep! I expect you'll check out the diabetes forum, though, being you.

Good night, and big hugs, with all well-wishes for you, Jeff, and Jack.

Jack is back to his normal self. Tomorrow I will arrange to have the radiographs sent over to the neurologist to look at and we will go from there.

And the vets apparently decided, once getting a better look at Jack's foot, that it wasn't a foxtail after all. More likely a cut or abrasion, which always sounded more likely to me. He was in the river a couple of times a few days before that. The water is still very high so he could easily have caught a branch or, worse yet, some broken glass. It is looking a lot better. It's dried out after they clipped it to give it better air and they cleaned it up.

They also clipped his nails and scraped the bit of tartar off his canines so he's all cleaned up.

I am debating whether the universe is trying to send me a message...

The MRI equipment has been having problems and I got a call today that it is not working and they have decided to have the machine replaced after a week or so of trying to repair it. So June 6 is off. They will let us know when they can confidently schedule an MRI.

I'm glad in a way... I'd like them to complete some MRIs and make sure it's functioning before we put Jack under. They had a dog in there today they said and put under anesthesia and then the machine failed to function despite successfully completing a test run. I guess that's pretty rude, letting someone else's dog be a guinea pig. But since Jack's back is not an imminent threat to life, I don't want to take any unnecessary chances.

Reminds me of sitting on a plane one day in southern California waiting to take off when a man wearing bib overalls and riding a big tricycle and carrying a toolbox peddled up to the side of the plane.... we were soon alerted that the altimeter was malfunctioning and this guy was here to fix it. Yikes!! I breathed a huge sigh of relief when they said they changed their mind and would wait for a new one to be sent over and installed!!

I am not a believer in fate or in signs from the heavens but I am starting to wonder if there's a message here I'm ignoring!
