I don't think I've ever seen him before. What a pretty boy. I can see how those eyes sucked you in when you were scanning pet sites back in the day

    Jack your sooo cute

Natalie I googled backside chewing a lot of peeps said allergies and some said thyroid.
Their giving chlorpheniramine instead of benadryl. Might be worth a try.
Have you got "the collar of shame" to put on him in the meantime?
Their saying to use milk of magnesia on the wound.

    Hope this helps

He thinks he's a terrier and somehow he's gonna dig his way down into that hole and pull out the squirrel...

Jack is not a camera fan so it's hard to get him to hold still AND look into the camera.

    Re: Border collie Jack

He has spent quite a bit of time the past week chewing on the back side of his right hip. I probably will take him in to see somebody as it seems like his right hip is bothering him in some fashion.

Just not sure who to take him to. I emailed the neurologist today asking what he thought would be best. If Jack needs x-rays of the hip, I would like to have them done by the neurologist and orthopedist at the specialty clinic so they get exactly the views they need to give it a thorough look.

The muscle relaxer stops the chewing but impossible to say if it's pain relief or just being sedated that allows him to leave it alone.

No fun for Jack. Hope the rest helps resolve the concerns and that he is feeling better soon. Good luck with the vehicle too - thank goodness for AAA!

    Re: Border collie Jack

    Excellent timing Patty!

Jack recently had another episode of limber tail Monday night - milder than the first time, but also associated with some kind of pain in his back or right hip. His tail is mostly back to normal, but his gait is still off and he's been chewing on a spot on his right hip that has gotten inflamed and red. He was dropping that hip sometimes while his tail was off kilter.

Not really sure what's behind this episode. He has been playing very assertive tug of war with Jeff in the morning as Jeff is leaving for work and could be he strained something doing that. I've been concerned about his back for a while because he has been "walking" his squats for a month or so.

So he's being rested... and I can tell he must be in some pain because he's not objecting to the rest much. I have a muscle relaxant for him. Gave him one the day of the vet visit but haven't given it since. Still debating whether he feels poorly enough to warrant medication. He's willing to play for short periods.

Jack's timing was good because my vehicle developed a problem yesterday that required AAA and a tow and I probably won't have it back until Tuesday or Wednesday. Glad I didn't have Jack with me at the time!

Spoiled, never use the word. In my family- we use the term "Very well loved" for children and pets, you sort of have to say it slowly , "oh he is very well loved" then tsk your teeth and roll you eyes, then everyone knows what you mean: Spoiled.

Happy B-Day Jack, you are very well loved....

Jack and I both thank everyone for the very sweet, kind birthday wishes for Mr. Jack, Yak, Jock, Jackson, Jackson Pawlick, Jackie, Bubba... I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

    Re: Border collie Jack

    Jack generally is good.

Healthwise, his back is stable, no better but no worse either as long as we keep him on Metacam. We tried taking him off of it briefly this summer and there is a marked difference in his stress level and edginess after he's been off of it for a few days. So at this point we hope to keep him on it indefinitely. It allows him his pre-back-pain-length walk of 20-25 minutes of moderate walking.

Emotionally, he has just absorbed himself into the household over the past year and is so much more cuddly and vocal. He loves to nap on the bed with Jeff, often with his head resting on Jeff's leg or his whole body tucked up against him. He's happiest when the three of us are all in one room or car and have food! He scolds us when he wants a Greenie - which, of course, we can't help but encourage. Totally inappropriate but very cute.

I'm pretty sure that if he made a wish for his birthday it was for the Katie cat to disappear.

With all of the uproar around here of new flooring projects stretching over two months, he's been stressed but generally handled it pretty well. Lots of noise, workers, furniture moved. Not what a management-oriented, ritualistic border collie likes at all. He will be happier once it's all done, which is a day or two away.

I hate that he's five already... want him to be a young dog forever.
