Goes through periods of lethargy. Is this normal, does it get better?
If you provide the info to Mike (and others), he will be able to advise you..My DVM says,"If Suzie ever has >+1 ketones, bring her in right away." During the very few times I have checked for ketones during periods of high BG, they were negative. Because the hospital chemstrips are hard to get and very expensive, I purchased Walgreens brand ketone stix..Either they are awful to read OR it's because no ketones have been observed. Also, I have never observed
"physical" symptoms like lethargy..since as a "worrywart", I'd be rushing Suzie to the DVM...Good Luck. Along with your DVM, You have great experienced people here to guide you!!!

Let us know a little more about your dog:
      Weight
      Type of insulin
      Insulin dose and frequency
      Food and frequency

Even small amounts of ketones can be life threatening. Did the vet give you anything to keep him hydrated?
Hi thank you for responding, he is 12lbs, gets NPH insulin 3 units twice a day. Vet prescribed Royal Canin glycogenic kibble, but i am slowly introducing a raw diet (primal) with Paradigm greens and a bit of coconut oil twice a day. He eats all of it (about 1cup total. BG was just 597 and it has gone up every time.

That’s a good starting dose. However, I’d give your vet a call and ask about the presence of ketones and what needs to be done to eliminate them. Even trace amounts can be life threatening.

Normal treatment at the vets should have been fast acting insulin to get his BG down and fluids to prevent dehydration.
