  • Treats?

Would like to know what you all use as treats for our "Sugar Babies"other than veggies!
I found some dehydrated liver treats (no flour, just liver). Would that be acceptable?
WD canned makes good treats too, cut in bite size and microwaved for 2 1/2 minutes. Cara loves those!
Anybody else has some ideas? Would love to hear them!!!

    Re: Treats?

I give dried Lamb Lungs when I can find them, its like a potatoe chip to a dog, very thin they are little, have a hard time here in PA finding them at times.

Other than that I use veggie's small piece of broc & turkey, sometimes a teeny piece of frozen pumpkin.

I used to give plain rawhide chews but now that she is older thats a no no for me.

      Hi Dolly,
Where would you find dried Lamb Lungs? We have a store called Tail Blazers here, (probably in the States too ) where I found the liver. Dried Lamb Lungs...sounds interesting!
      Thanks!

Dried meat is usually a pretty good treat. No carbs, limited calories. Look for ones made for pets with no additives, no added salt.

Thanks for this post, my boy Nitro was diagnosed with Diabetes a few months ago(an Cushings about 2 weeks ago) and I've been trying to find out what the best treats for him would be as I also have another dog Mia who doesn't have any of the problems so I want something for her as well.

I'll pass on the lamb lungs though, I can't even handle liver treats so they're a no no.

              Marion,

Found Tail Blazers--they aren't yet down here, but they do have some items that are found here in pet stores.

              http://www.tailblazerspets.com/tailblazers_treats.html

When you're looking for diabetic treats, you want to read the label to see if there are any carbs (grains of any type) and sugars or syrups, and avoid buying anything like that. Lucky got bits of "people" roast beef--because it was easy for me to see there were no carbs or sugars in it.

I see Tail Blazers has Merrick products. Even though Toodles doesn't have diabetes, I've bought these for him and noticed there were no carbs, sugars or added salt in them.

              Doggie Wishbone 6-8"
While we would like to attribute the creation of this treat to our old cow dog “Boomer”, may he rest in peace, we still are unsure of how it came about. Dogs love this natural treat which is made from a beef Achilles tendon. This tendon's popularity has grown over the years. We decided to fulfill our dogs wishes, no pun intended, and keep this treat on the menu.

              Ingredients:
              Beef Tendon

              Guaranteed Analysis
              Crude Protein (Min.) 80.00%
              Crude Fat (Min.) 7.00%
              Crude Fiber (Max.) 1.20%
              Moisture (Max.) 10.13%

              Jr. Texas Taffy
A Texas rendition of a treat that won't stick to your dogs teeth.

              Ingredients:
              Beef Jerky

              Guaranteed Analysis
              Crude Protein (Min.) 83.00%
              Crude Fat (Min.) 2.70%
              Crude Fiber (Max.) 1.20%
              Moisture (Max.) 9.30%

              The tendon lasts a while.

One of the people on the other board used to give the lamb lung treats to her diabetic. Here's the name they're sold under in the US:

              http://www.petguys.com/-746975817290.html

"Old West Baa Baa Q's treat for dogs are 100% all natural lamb lungs received fresh from USDA facilities. Soft enough for older dogs that can't have hard treats. Low in fat, contains no preservatives, artificial colors or soy. Great training treat with a proven taste that dogs love."

Also see that Tail Blazers carries the Dogswell line. I would stay away from them entirely because their treats are Made in China, just as so many of the chicken jerky treats are:

              http://www.amazon.com/Dogswell-Vital.../dp/B000F2UWI8

"True jerky treats with added nutrients: no flour; no wheat; no corn; no soy; no hormones; no antibiotics; no fillers; no added salt. Dogswell - because dogs are family too. Made in China."

              Hope this helps!

              Kathy

Thanks Kathy, will check out those Merrick treats. Cara will love them! So will Polly, who misses her milk bones the most. We are NOT interested in treats made in China!!

                  Re: Treats?

I just bought some Purina Lite Snackers from the vet, they are for dogs on diets using DCO and OM, she's had 3 since Friday, have not tested her BG since Friday since she had the blood tests and nail trims, maybe tonite. But these treats must be new, don't know if you can buy at a store.

Niki BG has been ok with the Lite Snackers her first treat is about 1 teapsoon of veg's and 1/2 of a lite snacker, 2nd treat is the other half of the light snacker.

Another treat I discovered thanks to Denise was Cheese Please
