  • My Doggy has Diebetes

I took her to the vet as the previous day she had been wanting to wee more and she was drinking silly amount of water.
Luckily we acted straight away so there were no keytones in her urine...
we have her on insulin twice a day and she has just spent the day at the vets doing blood tests etc every few hrs to sort her levels out...
she had a hypo yesterday did i panic ..yes !
I did as advised by the vet and gave her jam..30 secs later she was fine again...still only two weeks since diagnosis and they said it can take a few weeks to get her levels correct..
what worries me is what if she had a hypo in the night...

low blood sugar is really scary.

I'm not one of the pros around here but can you tell us how much she weighs, how much insulin you are giving her and what the #'s from the curve at the vet were?

    welcome to the forum! Judi

      Re: My Doggy has Diebetes

i agree with judi that is scary

catching it early is for the most part a good thing the problem at times the dog may still be producing his own insulin so even giving a small amount of insulin maybe to much.

you may want to begin home testing blood sugar. most on the forum do this to help with regulation and most important it will help to keep these babies safe when you see your dog acting a bit weird you can test and you will have an answer what is going on. before you go to bed you can test to see where the numbers are it also gives you peace of mind.

liquid sugar works best for low blood sugar honey or karo is what we use rubbed on the gums then followed by a teaspoon and some food . home testing can determine over time what is the correct response to low blood sugar

if you can respond to judis questions that would be a big help welcome to both of you

Welcome to the forum. It can take more than weeks, frankly, to get good regulation, so doing your own home testing will be helpful.

Best wishes and keep us updated.
Zoe: 12 yr old Black Lab/shepherd mix. Diagnosed 6/1/11. Currently on 15 units Novolin NPH 2x day, and hopefully as close to regulated as possible. Feeding merrick Grain Free Salmon and Sweet Potato. Weight 63lbs.

Welcome to the Forum......Lots of help and much info here to arm you with tools to work thru this process.

My dog was diagnosed with DB almost 6 weeks ago.....I am still in the regulation mode during this time. Curves have changed 3 times, Dose has been reduced from 15u 2x per day to start and we are now down to 12 units 2x per day. I'm positive my dog is also "honeymooning" and producing his own insulin. The dose he is taking is barely a "sniff" for a dog who is 125 pounds so I certainly expect to go up but that might be a month ,6 months or a year or more before it happens. The only way to know is by home testing. Aside from doing curves every two hours, on the days I don't I do a 6a BG reading at fasting/ then I feed him and shot/ that reading has taught me wether I need to reduce the dose or in my guys case sometimes I wait a half hour if the reading is low to give the food a head start. Then I test at noon and again at 5:30 before his evening meal and shot. 3 a day gives me peace of mind.....

I have figured out approx. how much he drops during walks by doing a pre walk post walk check and it is still amazing me that we're now getting drops from anywhere between 60 points to an amazing 123 points TODAY. This is helpful to me because it's just another tool to use to drop his BG.....I have done many many curves during the first month and used charts and a daily log to use as my reference from day to day.

Be patient with trying to get regulation..I'm hoping that I will have him somewhat regulated within 60 days.

            Re: My Doggy has Diebetes

Welcome to the forum. At this point, I have little to add. The more information you can give us about your fur baby, the better. None of us are vets, but we have hands-on experience with our own pets. Many times the combined suggestions are quite helpful.

You might check with your vet about the hypo incident. The concern about a nighttime hypo is valid, in my opinion. He/she may want to reduce the dose until you get some curves to establish history and trends. If not, a bedtime snack might be advisable. As Jim said, home testing is the best way to get that data asap. Much help available here to learn to do that and use the information as you go towards regulation. It will be helpful to your vet as well.

            Glad you are here!

                Re: My Doggy has Diebetes

Can you please get the results from your vet? Are you doing any testing at home? Let us know your pups weight and what you are feeding and any info your vet provided and we'll be sure to help you out! Glad the jam worked. Honey is good as well. I always had it available. Know that exercise can lower blood glucose so you need to be careful how active your dog is until you understand the glucose patterns WElcome to the forum and all these good folks are here for you!
Forbin, miss you every day. See you at the bridge Buddy.
