Oh yes the collectables! My dad's wife passed away about 4 yrs. ago and none of her family has come to pack up her "collectables". When I first started packing up the 50 odd bells I was very careful, newspaper and all. Three years later I am being a little less careful!!!

Another idea for when you are traveling is to use the leash to tie Decker to your waist when he is up and moving that way you can help him navigate and will be right there if he goes for a candy dish.

Great to hear the numbers. I haven't noticed the same same settling in with a dose on the Levemir as I did with The NPH. But then we have only done the initial dose and then one increase. It seems like it takes a day or a dose to bring down the high of the last lower dose numbers and then it is pretty solid.
Also with it's gradual steady action it ins't as scary with dropping to a low.

Oh Barb, what a terrible thing to have happen!

I always keep my dog's out of the front seat to because of the airbags.

When traveling to dog shows my SIL always keeps her dogs in high impact crates so to lesson the chances of injury happening, even escape, should there be an accident.

I think it is a wise thing to strap Decker in or secure him somehow. I have a safety belt attachment I use for Watson and he goes with me everywhere and has for 11 years. A few times I didn't have him strapped in I had to hit the brakes hard and he went flying into the dash board. That is why I got a safety belt attachment which holds him in around his chest and he hasn't had any more "flying" incidents since, but I am also much more careful when I have him in the car with me. I also think using familiar bedding or toys helps with the traveling. I even bring Watson's bed with him to the vet so he can lay on that if I have to leave him for the day, like I did with his 2 curve tests at the vets.

Thanks for all the harness tips! Barb - I'm sorry to hear about your friend's dog - how tragic!

The boys typically ride in the hatch of my SUV. A soft crate would be ideal but I'm not sure we'd be able to get Decker into one. Neither dog has been crated since they were about a year old.

Anyone ever heard of a harness that works with hatchbacks? Or even a harness that would go back and forth between back seats and hatch backs? I can't put Decker in the hatch when John is not with us because I don't have the strength to lift him out. Too high up, for my comfort, for him to jump out w/out being able to feel or see his landing. Will probably make a Pet Smart / Petco run before Sunday to see what they have out there.

Decker doesn't really use the dog bed. Kinser goes back and forth between our bed and the two dog beds. Figured the smell of one dog bed would be familiar enough to comfort Decker along with some of his toys and bone. Bringing Decker's bed would require not only putting our mattress in the vehicle but the pillows as well - he does like to have a soft place to rest his head !

Had an evening fasting of 353 last night. A bit higher than he has been showing but still under 400 so I was happy. Gave him the 7u at 6:15p and he headed South for a bit but did not come up higher than 350 prior to bed (10:30pish). Even hit a 274 - second night in a row we've had a showing in the 200 range.

Also showed some spunk after dinner. Looks like as we seem more 300 range numbers his energy level is increasing some. Was laying on my stomach trying to play a board game with the kid and he literally stood over my back and barked until I got up to play with him. Then he went to torment Kinser for a bit. Kinser is pretty tolerant but when he's had enough he is quick to put Decker in his place. Decker didn't even cower when Kinser went back at him this time. Confidence is getting stronger. We've always joked that Decker has probably taken a good couple of years off Kinser's life and that when Decker got older we'd have to get him a puppy to torment him the way he has Kinser. Thinking the only one who would be thrilled with a puppy at this point in our lives is Rebecca - so no puppy in our foreseeable future.

Woke up at 3:30a (have no idea why - but thinking I may need to invest in some soy milk?) and spot checked 423. Fasting at 6:15a was 353. Went ahead and gave him 7u this morning (instead of the 6.5u). Not seeing any mid to low 200's or any 100's so it seems the additional .5u will not send him too low at this point.

maybe continue raising the dose if allowed half unit but only one cycle at a time like you are doing

it may just let things move a bit slower but in reality compared to nph a half unit increase is like adding 2 units for the day

so if needed to raise again maybe do the night cycle another half unit to 7.5 and raise the day another half after you have reevaluated

once you see 200s for most of the day i would stop for a period a time and give it a long term response

it does sound like decker is seeing an improvement with renewed energy

definitely at this point levemir has had a good effect on him

we are definitely cheering him on and continued improvement

You have high spirits Holli. You definitely make me laugh and also encourage me with your humor in the face of these trials with our babies. We could lose our minds if we didn't take time to have a laugh once in a while. So happy to hear Decker is doing better on the lower end of the BGs. Keep up the good work.

So glad for you and Decker that there is continued progress. In my experience the dose changes don't seem to have the same progressive effect as they did with the NPH, but I have only increased one time.

Kind of glad he was able to torment Kinser. Getting back at him for the 2 tackles in the back yard?

If we don't talk before then, good luck on your trip and take us with you.
