Hi,
New to the site.
8 Yr old Choc Lab: Bruno
127lbs. (solid)
Diagnosed a year ago and has been blind for 3 months
I feed him SD w/d grain and can- 3 cups and 1 can/day split into 2 feedings
42units Humulin N bid ($24.88 @ Walmart)
1/2", 1cc, 29G syringes (have purchased from Diabeticsupplies for as little as
$5.50/hundred).
Bayer Breeze 2 meter; always +/- 20 units from blood tests. ($46 for 100)
I use elbow pad and scar on tip of tail for testing.
I, unfortunately, had a GSD with degenerative myelopathy (he passed 10/14/2011). The time I spent caring for him prevented me from giving my lab the early attention he needed which resulted in a delayed diagnosis. I saw him losing weight, but thought it was due to the high fiber-high protein diet he was eating along with my shepherd. By the time the non-stop drinking and voiding started he was in ketoacidosis. Even though I was able to regulate his BG quickly, the damage to his eyes had already begun. The only thing that allows me to take solace in my negligence is his uncanny ability to adapt to his loss of sight. He would still fetch a thermo-nuclear weapon if I threw one. It just takes him longer to find it via scent...but he would find it and bring it right to me.
Thrilled I found the site!
