  • 90% Ground Beef vs Boiled chicken?

I've noticed in alot of postings, boiled chicken is being used with kibble for meals. Would it be okay to use 90% ground beef instead of the boiled chicken? I suppose you would fry the ground beef then rinse it off to get rid of any fat. I'm just not sure if it's the calories or the fat that matters.

For me, cooking hamburger would be alot easier than boiling chicken and like I said in an earlier post, I just don't cook that, much not even for myself, so I'm looking for some short cuts.

Hope this isn't a stupid question.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

I have always used chicken or turkey - my dog was diagnosed with pancreatitis and has other digestive issues. Ground beef has too much fat for him. So, I used to buy ground turkey and cook that up. You cook it just like ground beef.

The problem was cost - so we started buying white meat chicken and we boil that now. Fat is the issue for many diabetic dogs.

You can also use fish as a protein substitute - but anything you give your dog has to be consistently fed and match with their insulin dosage.

I wouldn't recommend trying all different types of food unless it doesn't agree with your dog for some reason and then you have no choice.

    Good Luck!

I think boiling chicken is eaiser than frying hamburger. I boil three or four boneless breasts at a time and then drain off the broth and use that too. I ty to drain and skim any fat. I let it simmer until it shredds. After draining the broth I divide it up and put it in containers or freezer bags and freeze it. Then the day before I think I will need it I get it out and put it in the frig.

I can't stand the smell that frying leaves and my other dog is petrified when you fry anything. She won't even stay in the house. Stands outside the door and shakes and whines.

If you go to Sams or Costco you can get a big pack and do a lot at one time.

I used ground beef at the beginning due to pickyness but even then I boiled it to make sure I removed all fat. Didn't want to take any chances with pancreatitis
And there's nothing more of a mess than boiling hamburger!!

I use either slow cooked / shredded chicken thighs prepared by a neighbor weekly for her crew of Westies or fried ground chuck (fat drained off) to add to O's WD kibble at each meal.

He also gets 3/4 of a medium egg hard boiled midway between meals.

I use the chicken and beef as flavor enhancements and not as a substitute for anything.

In my many experiments, I first tried ground chicken Buddy and Cleo didn't take to it. I then used ground beef and ground chicken and they like that mix. I used to fry it, rinse it and keep a week's supply in a container and freeze the rest. Every time I served it, I rinsed it again under hot water to further remove the fat and warm it up.

Since our last visit to the vet, she suggested that we boil it.

I boil 2 parts ground beef, 1 part ground chicken, once cooked, I rinse it under hot water, keep whatever portions I will use in the week and freeze the rest in baggies. I will admit that it is not the most appetizing thing to look at but it seems to remove a lot more fat.

As for the kibbles, when Buddy developed kidney problems, I was told to reduce the protein content of his meals. The previous one was 32% and he used to get small pieces of the white of hard boiled eggs as treats. Both Buddy and Cleo had grain allergies and the only grain free lower protein that I could find was Natual Balance (Limited Ingredients) 20% protein. They wouldn't go for it, and the final try was to mix 2/3 Natural Balance with 1/3 Taste of the Wild Salmon.

Cleo is 24 pounds and her AM and PM meals are
one handful of kibbles (Cleo is not diabetic so my measuring is as as precise)
            warm water
2 tablespoons of cooked ground beef/chicken (warmed under hot water)
1 tablespoon of cooked brocoli, green beans (sometimes cauliflower) and put in food processor.

            Hope this helps
            Louise

i special order lean grounded beef heart from the grocery store this is something that is allot cheaper than ground beef which makes sense not allot of people ordering it

i process collard greens kale and char and mix it into the meat to let the enzymes in the meat break the vegetable matter down to make it easier for digestion jesse did have pancreatitis at the beginning

this meat is served raw i believe any fat in the meat in a raw state does not have the same affect as cooked fat jesse has been eating it for 2 years no pancreas problems or flareups and no cooking just some preparation .
