Re: Revised: How long has your dog lived with Diabetes?

It absolutely does make a difference as to the age at which they were dx with diabetes.

My Mildred was dx at 5 years old so lived 7.5 years with diabetes and would have continued on had it not been for the bladder cancer that took her life.
Her life ending had nothing to do with the diabetes.

I know of several whose pups were dx at a very young age and are thriving, years into the diabetes.

In all of my nearly 8 years being involved with pet diabetes groups I've only seen 4 that have actually died from diabetic complications...3 from ketoacidosis (2 unspayed females) and 1 from hypoglycemia.

Lily was dx days after her 3rd birthday. She is 7 1/2 now. She still acts like a pup and her diabetes hasn't slowed her down at all. I had an awful vet at dx and was told she'd only have 2 years to live and her ophthalmologist said she'd go blind within the year. Thank goodness I found support and ACCURATE information online. Diabetes isn’t going to get her. I know that now. We have many happy years ahead. Four and a half years diabetic and going strong!

This is such a great post! I continue to have the 1 year blindness/2 year death numbers nag at me even though Sammie looks and acts so healthy and happy! It's like a little voice in the back of my head reminding me that the other shoe is going to drop soon. Your post has made that voice quiet down - thanks!! Looking forward to many, many years enjoying Sammie!

I think another interesting set of data to collect would be the age of diagnosis. If a dog was diagnosed at 14 and lived more than a year but less than 2, that would make for a fairly average lifespan (depending on the size of the dog).
Gigi - 11.5 year old Jack Russell/Beagle mix - dx 11/11, hypothyroid dx 8/23/12 | Insulin: Novolin N | Frequency: 2x's per day | Dosage: 4-5 units, depends on the day | Blood Glucose Meter: Alpha Trak 2 | Typical BG Readings: 100-200| Regulation: Doing great! | Celebrating 11 years together, 3.5 of those as diabetic |

I totally agree - I think thats where they get the scare us figures from.
I was terrified I was going to lose Alfie - he was just 5 years old when diagnosed and didn't think he would live to see 7 but thats him 9 now.
Alfie- 11 1/2yrs. 8kg diagnosed June 2008. Insulin - NPH, Novorapid & Caninsulin - a work in progress! Dx left brain neuro focal lymphoma 4th Dec 2012, still fighting on!.

It does look scary when you just look at the numbers without knowing the stories behind it. Some of the dogs obviously were a lot older when diagnosed so DID have average life spans and I have noticed that most of the dogs didn't die from diabetes or complications at all. So it's still not a death sentence. Cancer seems to be the number one killer of our pups. Think I read that somewhere.

Yeah, I think you're right about cancer, Shelly. Ugh! Can't our pups live to be as old as a Galapagos turtle or something? It's just not fair.

Altho our pets do not live nearly long enough I would not want to out live any of mine with then the worry of who will be able to take care of them when I'm gone.

ugh, is right about the cancer!

Lucy just celebrated her 3rd Gotcha! day with David & Connie so that puts her right about 3.5 years & going strong.

Monk lived from Sept 2006 to March 2012 and did really well until November 2011 and most of you know he did not die from diabetes or related illnesses. I feel like he would have lived another 2 years minimum if surgery had gone well.

I know a few dogs have passed into a new year. Later this year, maybe I will restart this so we can get an updated list.

                            Hi all,

New here and happy to have found this site! I'm Sharon and I have a 6 year old Chocolate Lab, Diesel, who was diagnosed at 18 months as diabetic. He's doing quite well and our vets are very pleased with his overall health.

We've had ups and downs over the years managing this. It will be nice to have a community to help with the downs and celebrate the ups!

Diesel is also almost 3 years post op for cataract removal which was a huge success.
Sharon and Diesel 91 lb Chocolate Lab diagnosed in 2007 at 18 months old. On Humulin N 21 units am/22 units pm and fed Wellness CORE

I thought this meant how long has it been living with diabetes. I am sorry for screwing this up.
