    Re: Milk Thistle

Have you thought of getting Denamarin. You do not have to purchase through your vet, but can get it on line. If you are looking to bring down and protect the Liver values in Bogie, this may help.

Otherwise, you can just get regular Milk Thistle and dose according to a 100lb adult. Provide 1/4 capsule if Bogie is 25lbs. or thereabouts.

      Re: Milk Thistle

Hi - I found the denamarin expensive compared to Milk Thistle capsules. Here's some information I can pass along to you regarding dosages:

      Milk thistle:

Get one that is 80% sylimarin. You can buy this in health food stores. It comes in powder capsules or liquid drops. The drops are more potent.

The newsletter "Healthy Pets - Naturally" recommends that dogs be dosed at the following rates:

DOG'S SIZE DOSE AS % OF ADULT HUMAN DOSE
      Less than 5 lbs 10%
      5-10 lbs 15%
      11-20 lbs 20%
      21-40 lbs 30%
      41-70 lbs 50%
      71-100 lbs 75%
      100 lbs 100%

So sorry, I forgot to mention that you will want to pair milk thistle with Sam-E. The recommended doses for SamE are:

        Sam-E:

Can buy in drugstore, pharmacy, online. Denosyl SD4 manufacturer recommends that dogs be dosed at the following rates:

Dogs less than 12 pounds: one 90 mg tablet
Dogs between 12 and 25 pounds: two 90 mg tablets
Dogs between 25 and 35 pounds: one 225 mg tablet
Dogs between 35 and 65 pounds: two 225 mg tablets
Dogs over 65 pounds: three 225 mg tablets

Be sure to give on an empty stomach. I just started using the Denamarin chewables with Ali.

Hi Barb and Thank you... I went to the site you provided but they need a prescription from the vet so I will have to look on the internet for a differant site.

Just ordered the Denamarin for Bogie from 1800petmed.com

Quick ?? Should I still give him the milk thistle with the Denamarin or finish the Denamarin and then start the milk thistle?

Just saw the use caution comment for Denamarin

Medications for depression (Antidepressant drugs) interacts with SAMe
SAMe increases a brain chemical called serotonin. Some medications for depression also increase the brain chemical serotonin. Taking SAMe along with these medications for depression might increase serotonin too much and cause serious side effects including heart problems, shivering, and anxiety. Do not take SAMe if you are taking medications for depression.

Some of these medications for depression include fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), imipramine (Tofranil), and others.
                  http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supple...dientName=SAMe

Darn it!!! Wouldn't you know it... Bogie takes fluoxetine and I already ordered it.

                        Re: Milk Thistle

I haven't read all responses yet, but I've used NHV since July. But it looks like they changed the label and this is the new:

                        http://www.petwellbeing.com/products/dog-liver-disease

I calculated 1 drop for every 2 pounds.

Sophia diagnosed with Lymes in July and the antibiotics hard on her liver. The milk thistle brought it down from 415 to 315 in a week. And back to normal in 2 weeks.

(I'm still using it as I'm wondering if her diabetes may actually be in response to Cushings.)

They say to give on an empty stomach.
Westie diagnoesd 10/12. Diagnosed 7/12 with Lymes. 4 unit of Humulin in morning. 3 with evening meal. As of now home cooked meals and also Standard Process supplements and Chinese herbs.

                          Re: Milk Thistle

I used only Milk Thistle in the beginning with no Sam-e. But this is my understanding of the reasoning for both.

                          1. Milk Thistle will repair the liver, regenerate cells. The liver is the one organ that has that capability.
                          2. Same-e will protect the liver.

So, if you are giving drugs to that are hard on the liver, then it would be wise to give both. Otherwise the Milk Thistle will only repair the liver.

Later when Abby was on a probiotic, I used the Denmarin, as I wanted to do both.

Also, I found that high liver functions can be a sign of uncontolled diabetes, and not necessarily Cushings.

Thanks you Barb, I ordered some Milk Thistle that is specifically for dogs and hope it arrives by Monday. I can't use the Sam-E because of the fluoxetine so it is good to know they don't "have" to go togather.

Bogie had his last blood panel done in Aug and they like a new one every 6 months. The next one I will request that they check the triglycerides too.

Quick ??? Do you give Milk Thistle on a daily basis or on an as needed basis? I have been giving it to Bogie daily but I am not sure if I should continue to give it to him daily or just as needed.
                              Thanks
