For the owners that purchase their diabetic dogs food, what brand do you buy and where. Right now, little Meeko is on WD and it's getting expensive buying those cases. I was wondering if there is a better alternative that cheaper but just as good for him. He recently got his blood glucose curve test at the vet and it's still fluctuting so we had to bump his dose to 3 units x2 a day. he eats at 9am/9pm.

I used Orijen Dry with chopped Gr. Beans or Brocolli, you might try Orijen alone if you wish, high in protein, its now at the Petco's I believe or Petsmart, I used to buy mine at the feed store.Originally posted by Meeko23 View PostFor the owners that purchase their diabetic dogs food, what brand do you buy and where. I buy Purina OM and it is just as expensive. I think a lot of members have used one of the Blue Buffalo diet foods. (healthy weight?)
I have to get mine at the vet's officeJenny: 6/6/2000 - 11/10/2014 She lived with diabetes and cushings for 3 1/2 years. She was one of a kind and we miss her.

You're right, ... the price increases in pet food have been crazy over the past year.Originally posted by Meeko23 View PostFor the owners that purchase their diabetic dogs food, what brand do you buy and where. Here's a $7 coupon from Hill's website. If you use your back arrow after printing one you can print a second.
After you print the coupons their software remembers your MAC (machine ID) and won't let you print another from that machine. Easy fix ... just print it from another computer. I've been using these coupons for almost

We used science diet light for awhile. Non prescription but you can still use the coupons Bill posted, I think. Had to change Decker to grain free..now use wellness core reduced fat. Find that to be a bit costly too.Holli & Decker // diagnosed November 5th, 2011 // Journeyed to the bridge January 26th, 2013, surrounded by his family at home // 9 years old // Levemir insulin // Hypothyroid // C1-C5 cervical spinal lesion // weight 87 lbs // Run with the wind my sweet boy. I don't use diabetic food. But that doesn't mean the food isn't pricey. My dog has allergies, so I buy expensive limited ingredient food.
My point is that while it appears that w/d does help with getting a dog regulated, it's not a requirement to use diabetic food. So, I would choose a high quality food, with a solid fiber content, and you can adjust the insulin from there.
This is just my opinion.
Zoe: 12 yr old Black Lab/shepherd mix. Diagnosed 6/1/11. Currently on 15 units Novolin NPH 2x day, and hopefully as close to regulated as possible. Feeding merrick Grain Free Salmon and Sweet Potato. Weight 63lbs.

When I asked my vet if I needed to change Jake's diet, she said no. Just keep him on what he is use to. I feed him 4 Health Lamb and Rice. It isn't expensive at all, just something that both my dogs do well on.

That's key ... if the pup's enjoying what he's eating, and it's reasonably healthy, leave it be. One of the the biggest problem you can have with a sugar pup is him not eating.Originally posted by Linda1 View PostWhen I asked my vet if I needed to change Jake's diet, she said no. Re: Alternatives to W/D?! It's getting pricy!
Thanks everyone! Ill check those out today when I go to petsmart. Ill buy a variety to see what he likes. I feel like he's getting tired of the plain w/d and it doesn't seem to be helping him as much.

Jerky, rawhide, new ball can affect Annie. Obviously she doesn't eat the ball, but she gets excitement; exercise chewing and running around with them that raises her BGsOriginally posted by Meeko23 View PostAre raw hides okay for him to have once a day? I heard chicken jerky is okay if its all natural, so he gets those once a week or so.
Annie was an 18 pound Lhasa Apso that crossed the rainbow bridge on 10-5-17. She was nearly 17 years old and diabetic for 9½ years.

Re: Alternatives to W/D?! It's getting pricy!
Hey there,
My vet said that (in my Carlie's case, at least) rawhides are fine. She said to make sure that they're made in America, though, since they're better regulated here than in some other places. I think a few companies treat the. with potentially unsafe chemicals.
