  • dog food, fiber, etc.

In my post about insulin and cost I mentioned that I've changed Connor's dog food a few times because we thought he had allergies. Now we are not too sure about the allergies because nothing changed with him through food changes.

After finding out he was diabetic he went on Hills W/D. I'm taking him off of it for a few reasons, cost, availability, and I don't like all the ingredients in it. The food I love is Honest Kitchen, what a fantastic food and wonderful company; however I'm not working right now so I just can't afford that. I made the switch to Solid Gold Holistique Blendz. It's got good ratings other then a lot of its protein is plant based (so I may be adding a bit of chicken or boiled lean hamburger or whatever you all recommend to it). And it's a bit cheaper then the Hills and I can walk across the street to the feed store and get it.

When I compare the nutritional values to Hills it's similar but it doesn't have a lot of fiber in it. I've read here that some of you add fiber with Metamucil or other sorts of things and I'm wondering if one of those products is better then the other? Also how much do you add? Connor is about 62 lbs.

Are there any other things that you do for your diabetic dogs that are healthy for them? And other additives?

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm trying to learn all I can and make this journey for Connor as smooth as possible.

    Re: dog food, fiber, etc.

I'll be following this thread. I'm still trying to find a good food for Jake that I can afford and get locally.
My vet told me I could continue feeding Jake the same food he had been on for years, but I was afraid it had way too much rice in it, so I switched him. But now I have to order this new food online and in the end, I'm not sure it is any better. He also has developed two hot spots since switching.
Old food: 4health Lamb and Rice
New food: Taste of the Wild South West Canyon Dry
It would really help if they break down the carbs in the nutritional information.

diabetic dogs can eat just about anything if it works well with insulin high fat foods can be problematic for the increased potential for pancreatitis in diabetic dogs many times they can eat what they were eating before many vets will recommend a prescription food because they have a track record remember most vets are not nutritionist thats not what they do which is the same for doctors in humans

i feed jesse a partially raw diet many would say that would not be a good idea for a diabetic dog do to the potential of a compromised immune system but she has done very well on it i do have to add some supplements and vitamins for balance cost is about the same a premium dog food
