  • Hydrocortisone cream

Samantha has been doing great altho she is pretty much blind, A few days ago mom started putting Hydrocortisone cream on what she believes is a hotspot, well today her blood sugar is way up!!I tested it this morning staring at 4:30 am before her first meal, It was 434, at 6:30 it was 523, at 8:30 its 473, we have NOT changed her diet and she is on 3 and 1/2 units of insulin, which for the past 2 weeks she has been running between 150-183, could the hydrocortisone cream be what is causing her blood sugar to be so high??its 0.5% hydrocortisone lotion for dogs.

    Thanks! Jeannette

    Re: Hydrocortisone cream

    its possible

i guess its the only change but the hotspot itself may cause it also or just allergies others have reported this

its a trial and error so you may want to stop using it for a few days and see what happens

A visit to a kinesiologist one time explain to me that you can absorb an aspirin just as effectively through the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. I was allergic to the plastics of my mouse....

So, taking that one step further, I believe anything topical can be absorbed by the body.

Connor has a bazillion allergies. Right now they are in check but as spring comes who knows.

Last year at one time he was losing his fur and had over 100 hotspots most infected with staph (not the mersa kind).

He's cleared up now with some allergy meds and if he gets a stop I use Richard's Organics Incredible Skin Spray. It has lots of good stuff in it and if I catch Connor's hot spots early with this they seem to heal up with medical intervention by the vet.

Oh dear, your poor furbaby, Thank god Samantha is not that bad or ever has been, she does get a hotspot about once a year, she is a pom and she is shedding quite a bit now, I keep ker clipped to about 1/2 inch otherwise she is a big puffball!! Samantha is going to the vet Monday her levels were pretty high today,

Fast at 4:30 am was 436, then I fed her, she gets 1/2 cup DCO and 1 tablespoon of canned OM 4 units Novalin N

              6:30 am she was 523

              8:30 am she was 473

              10:30 am she was 318

              12:30 pm she was 137

              2:30pm she was 159

4:30 pm she was 331, she was fed at this time and I gave her 4 units Novalin N up until today she was getting 3 and a half

So we are off to the vet Monday for a checkup and such

you are seeing big swings in blood sugar from what you posted sometimes a clue to an overdosing situation

also numbers in the higher range on one of jesses meters read higher than reality it could read a 100 points or higher getting into the 400s and higher levels

                  Re: Hydrocortisone cream

When Tiggy's allergies are really bad I occasionall will put hydrocortisone on the spots she's chewed/ licked. It does raise her number somewhat... Now is it because its being absorbed or is she actually licking the area after I put it on??? Both is the answer here, but I find I only have to use it for a couple days till the area heals to the extent it isn't bothering her. The slightly higher numbers are worth it to sooth the irritation

Also, when she is going crazy scratching with the allergies her numbers will be somewhat elevated due to the stress of the irritation. Much rather make her comfortable with the cortisone ( occasional high numbers don't seem to bother her) then to watch her suffer with her allergies
