  • supplements for diabetic dogs eyes

I've tried GlucoEnsure and who knows if it helped Connor. It's very expensive. And the other product Ocu-Glo is about the same price. Does anyone have any comments about these products? They seem to contain billberry, lutein, grapeseed and Omega 3's.

I want to do everything I can to help Connors vision (which is still ok now but he does have the beginnings of cataracts) but these drugs in the correct dosages run a couple of hundred per month for him. I just picked up all Connor's current Rx at Walmart yesterday - over $150. per month. (insulin, syringes, antibiotic, antihistamine)

Does anyone just go to the health food store and give some of these supplements on their own?

    Thanks for any comments,

    Susan and Con

I don't think I'm the one that suggested that brand, but it may be good. I've been using either this brand, or the Target generic mini size capsule. Annie will eat / swallow the mini size capsule just placed on top of her kibble.

There are many brands of over-the-counter fish oil. Not sure if it really helped Annie's eyes or not, she still went blind from glaucoma. Have you asked your ophthalmologist, or normal vet?

Al either goes to the Vitamin store or orders ours on line. We give Mini Ocuvite Adult 50+ with her morning meal and OcuGuard Plus with her evening meal. Mini still has her eyesite but Al always looks ahead to see what we can give her to help prevent anything. Time will tell.

Well that's my 2 cents worth...hope it helps.

I did some research early on, as this was a major concern for me as well, and even more so that I see that Abby is loosing her hearing as well.

I have been giving her Bilberry, and I feel that she is a on a fish diet, so I have stopped the Fish oil, but I would add this as well, if she was on a different diet.

I did use the Ocu-Glo and you are correct, it is very expensive to maintain. I will periodically give her some of this, but I try to stretch it out.

Not sure if has helped. She can still see, but who knows what really helps. My vet doesn't think anything can be given to stop the maturing of cataracts or the prevention of them.... but we always like to prove them wrong, or at least I do...

I started Pippa on the occuglo supplement from a month or so after diagnosed.

Its is expensive, £65 for a three month supply, but would be much more for a larger dog as Pips only on one capsule daily for her weight.

i know nothings guarenteed and certainly the occuglo people dont suggest that it may prevent diabetic cataracts, but as she still has good vision 1 year in to this I will be continuing with it. I think of it as her eye insurance policy. I dont want to mix this up as whatever we are doing is working at the moment.
Pippa; Westie, diagnosed 17th April 2012 at 6.5 years old, 8.7kgs, 6.8 units canninsulin bd, Burns high oats food . Lives with George 9 (Black lab), Polly 19 (cat) and Basil 15 (diabetic mog for 5+ years). Im Jen and we live in West Wales where it rains too much!
