Ahhhhh, we finally got our Ali pics fix

Those sweet and memorable moments are what simply drives you to continue the fight. You two make a good team (oups, sorry Tim), you 3.

The numbers really look good for all that has happened and the meds that she is on.

Ali would have been happy at our house 2 weeks ago. Our neighbours' kid (17) found a baby rabbit hiding in a wood pile and took it home to protect it. He named it Clyde. The family was going away for the weekend and they asked us to <rabbitsit<. Cleo just absolutely went crazy over that little baby rabbit. We put the cage on the floor and they were kissing. If we had the cage on the table or on a chair, she just kept going around trying to gently get nose to nose with the rabbit. At night, Ron put the rabbit in my painting studio (yep with a nitelight) and Cleo kept asking to go and check. It was priceless

Hope things continue to go well for you both.

      Take good cae

Bg was 330 at 3:21pm so I gave 1/16u Humalog to keep her from going higher before shot time tonight. She's sleeping now.

Doc called and left a message on my machine. Vaginal culture is e.coli and sensitive to "just about everything." He said if I have something I could start it otherwise we'll wait for the final nasal culture on Monday.

I have Amoxicillin and Simplicef from previous infections in the cupboard.
        Thoughts floating through my head:
        - Amox would be cheaper
        - Though Simplicef is once a day
        - Simplicef is was what she was on since Jan. and we just had an infection pop up this July
        - Though the last e.coli UTI was resistant to all the cephalosporins. Actually might have been resistant to both. Yep, just looked and it was resistant to almost everything but Cipro, Baytril, Tetracycline, and Sulfa drug.

I think I'll go ahead and start the Simplicef. She really needs to be on something. I usually give it in her 2nd meal during the day but think I'll give it in her PM injection so it's spaced out from her Dex. If the nasal culture comes back resistant to it we'll switch. At this point she's been on so many different antibiotics and for so long that super bugs are always possible when guessing but I think it's the right thing to do.

That dosing makes sense with Shelby's Addisons, Elisha.

Thank you Sandy, Anna, Anne-Marie, and Judi

Louise, we did babysit a neighbors hamster once before diabetes. I had to put him up on a cardtable because Ali wouldn't leave him alone. That's sweet Cleo was nose to nose with the bunny. Ali would have been kissing him to see what he tasted like instead of for pure sweetness.

Fasting tonight 401 despite adding the Humalog this afternoon. Gave 1/8u Humalog + her 7 1/4 NPH. Her NPH went in a bit stiff but aspirated ok. I was worried about a sharp drop but at 30 minutes she was 411. I'm guessing with the rise she had earlier, her usual correction of 1/16 wasn't enough.

I did start the Simplicef tonight so a lot of new variables in the mix.

If nothing else maybe the steroids will give her and you a break from the sharp drops.

Just caught up on your thread, Patty, Tim and Ali. Wow. You have really all been through the mill, and, so far, come out on the other side. I think all things considered, Ali is doing amazingly well, and - WE KNOW WHY - it's your fabulous attention and care (along with some pretty decent vets - I love the vet-language "cessated" to mean quit giving, just for instance).

Through all my time away from the forum, you are on my mind, and the prayers are flowing from here.

Kumbi had some Dexamethasone briefly, and it made him feel very chipper. Just thought I'd mention that!

Love the latest pics! She looks good! (Even with all she has been through!) Am starting my very first at home blood glucose day today. The vet lent me an Alphatrak2 and all the fixin's that go with it, believe it or not! Since Blackjack's numbers were crazy at the vet's office on Wednesday, he wanted to see what I would get at home. Supposed to call tomorrow with the results and see where we go from there. I have done a couple random checks in the past few days just to make sure I can do it. Now, I have to admit, I don't know what I was afraid of by not doing this on my own earlier..It's not that bad..lol..I watched the videos on this site and am doing the inner lip. Blackjack is such a nice, mellow guy and that makes it easier I am sure. So far today I have a 319 reading before food and insulin and now a 289 one hour post 30 units and food. Thanks for taking the time to keep us updated on Ali and love the added pictures

I now know why I was so freaked out about the Dex...we are having a rough day. Like Tami said, it's a guess as to what to give.

All we have to work on are previous trends and sensitivity so it's hard to give significantly more right away not knowing how she'll respond to the change.

                        9/22/12 - 1st day on Dexamethasone
                        AM

                        223 - 1 Hour
                        185 - 3 Hour
                        158 - 4 Hour - fed 147g Chicken + 3/8t cranberry powder + 3/8t D-Mannose + 1 fish oil squeezed
                        178 - 5 Hour
219 - 6.5 Hour - tested because I needed to run out and she went with me 1:10-2:35p ride in car
                        --- - 8.5 Hour - 1g Chicken + 125mg Keppra
                        330 - 9 Hour - 1/16u Humalog
                        PM
                        401 - Fasting 7 1/4u + 1/8u Humalog - fed 123g Pheasant + 3/4t probiotic + vit B, C, E + 100mg Zoni + 200mg Simplicef
                        411 - 30 min
                        299 - 2.75 Hour - restless so tested early
307 - 4 Hour - 1g Chicken + 125 Keppra, will wait until Hour 6 to see if she drops before feeding
                        349 - 6 Hour - 1/8+ Humalog - 147g Chicken + 1/4t cranberry + 3/8t D-Mannose + Fish oil cap squeezed
                        474 - 9.75 Hour - Woke panting, restless - gave 1/8u Humalog

                        9/23/12
                        AM
                        489 - Fasting 7 3/8u + 1/16u Humalog - (She usually drops pretty good in the AM if she's had Humalog overnight that's overlapped into the morning so I didn't want to overdo it) Fed 123g Pheasant + 3/4t probiotic + 100mg Zoni + 20mg Pepcid + 1.5mg Dex + 125mg Keppra
454 - 30 min out to potty then upstairs
306 - 3 Hour - Pretty big drop, brushed teeth, pretty active walking around, sat out front with me awhile
303 - 4 Hour - not dropping, will wait until to see if she drops further
                        458 - 5 Hour - 1/4u Humalog - fed 150g Chicken + 3/8t cranberry + 3/8t D-Mannose + Fish oil
                        499 - 6 Hour - 1/8u Humalog - since it's overlapping by 2 hours
                        429 - 7 Hour

Her Keppra is due again now. I've got my watch alarm set for the three 8 hour time spans.

It's hard for me to increase insulin in big jumps because of Ali's previous sensitivity and drops. I find myself gun shy but these numbers are sooo high. I may give 8u N tonight.

Oh my goodness and so much time has passed getting through the morning, I almost forgot to post!

Many thanks for the prayers regarding Ali's vision because I BELIEVE SHE CAN SEE out of her right eye! Thanking God this Sunday morning

Covering the left she has a menace response where she didn't before. I will try to get a video when Tim gets back later this afternoon.

I imagine Ali will need at least 1 more dose of Humalog yet today if not 2 so going to have to keep checking her. She drinking tons and peeing tons.

She was also able to get up on her own last night whenever we went out which is huge.

Keep the prayers coming. Our "borrowed time" is precious and I'm hoping we can get her stabilized on the steroid.

wow it looks like the steroids are kicking in you and tami are on the same merry go round

i think you can raise the dose a bit faster as i discussed with tami going faster and larger can be done but when Resistance is broken and that maybe 300s i would back down and depending how big the increase is how much you would need to reduce then let things settle for a couple days

i know this is a bit riskier but you are so on top of things i dont see a problem

lots of things may change with ali and you may have scrap the normal routine only time will tell

you definitely got me and jesses prayers for things to stabilize soon

Oh Patty. I feel your pain.

I know that "every dog is different" - but my thoughts. You will have to move faster than normal / faster than is comfortable. Sydney typically is ULTRA sensitive to 1/2 unit of R. If she is ever high, we "juice her" with 1/2 unit R and she drops nicely. Well - you can see how much we juiced her over the last few days and it is absolutely WILD the amount of R we were using. I do think it's like Jesse girl said - you have to break through the resistance.

I know it totally sucks as you don't want her to crash - but you are as OCD at testing as I am - she is in good hands. From September 19th to now, we have tested Sydney 44 times (I sure hope she forgives me).

Big hugs to you and please please give Ali a squeeze from me (actually - from all of us ).
