  • Pancreatitis in diabetic dogs

Hello! New to this. I have my 3 year old min pin Penny who was diagnosed with diabetes in March of this year. We've been able to manage it pretty well but she has small bouts of pancreatitis every once in a while although she is on a restricted diet of W/D kibble and boiled chicken (no fat/skin). ZERO treats.

Vet stated that this might happen every so often even though no fatty food was eaten??

Is this common in diabetic dogs?

I had to leave her at my vet overnight for monitoring as she was hooked up to IVs to help her hydrate.

Sorry to hear of your difficulties. We are in a similar boat and waiting to see other responses. We just barely survived our Quincy's first bout of severe pancreatitis and things seem to be okay atm. The vet did say once the dog has the disease, it can re-occur and his Cushings makes the chances much larger.

Curious, did your vet do ultrasound to diagnose the pancreatic flare ups, blood work, or did you see clinical symptoms?

We are monitoring Quincy so close right now, I'm sure he thinks he's a pin-cushion. He tolerates it surprisingly well. He's on R/D and combination of Evo and Wellness. All no fat or low fat.

    Good luck Pennylane!

Unfortunately, it's very common in diabetic dogs.

I am also new to the site although my dog jojo has had diabetes for over 4 years. He has had numerous bouts of pancreatitis and from what my Vet has said it is very common in diabetic dogs. He has been given Cerenea for nausea and receives fluids both at vets office and at home by me when it has happened.
I hope that your baby feels better soon!

Maggie developed her first bout of pancreatitis when she was a little over a year old and was bitten by a copperhead twice. She almost died but survived only to develop diabetes at about age 7. I think her pancreas just decided to stop completely. But, she is tough as nails and has lived seven years with diabetes. She has had a few pancreatitis bouts. I thought we were past all that but my husband and I went out of town and she just stressed herself into it this summer.

Her diet has probably more fat than most but I have found certain ingredients can set her off more so than fat and she is so picky that it was hard to find something she would eat. My best advice is to find something that works and stick with it. Look for early warning signs of a flare-up and try to prevent it. I used to give cerenia as a preventative if she even acted sick. She took pepcid for a long time as well. I also never forced food on her before she was ready - she always "tells" me with her body language how she feels.
Maggie - 15 1/2 y/o JRT diagnosed 9/2007, Angel status on 6/20/16. Her mantra was never give up but her body couldn't keep up with her spirit. Someday, baby.......

            amy gives sound advice

sometimes we get so caught up with the diabetes and the thought process of staying consistent with food and insulin that we may force the issue with food and thinking there is no deviation even if our pup does not feel well .

we have learned on the forum that a dose can be adjusted to how much is consumed . you can even give a reduced dose without any food so there is flexibility when need be .
Jesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .

I almost lost my dog to pancreatitis and that's how we found out she had diabetes it took her almost a month to recover from the pancreatitis. She has not had any type of issues with the pancreas since but I keep a close eye on signs.
