The reason I ask is because of a buddy that just had his 12 y/o dog diagnosed with advanced diabetes (he never even knew his dog had it to begin with).
My Story (Reader's Digest version):
I had a cat come down with Diabetes (probably from being fed dry cat food). The vet helped with the tests and getting the Insulin started, to get him regulated. As soon as I found out, I started doing research on the internets and found a guy on a message board that claimed to have basically "cured" dozens of cats of diabetes. I envisioned my life (my cat's life) consisting of being given insulin shots 12 hours apart for the rest of his life, which I was prepared to do, but it would definitely be a lifestyle change for both of us.
I had a discussion with the guy and followed his advice. Once his blood sugar levels were stabilized, we started to SLOWLY decrease the amount of insulin given. (NOTE: I immediately changed his diet to wet cat food, as recommended by the guy and a cat diabetes website). By the end he was only being given a drop of insulin. After about three months, my cat's BS levels were still normal. At that point insulin was no longer given and his BS levels remained good.
This was back in May (the conclusion of the three months of insulin treatment/weaning) and he's been fine ever since. So I guess you can say that he's been "cured" of diabetes.
My question is, has anyone heard of anything similar being done in dogs? My buddy is in a bad way and is pretty sure that his dog probably isn't going to make it, according to what his Vet has told him.
Please Help!
