  • Question about neuropathy

My Min Pin was just diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy(12/26/14). He has been showing symptoms for the past two weeks(severe hind leg weakness, walking into things, falling down, walking past the door to go out, having to hold him to toilet). I thought that maybe he fell or slipped and hurt himself when I had a friend watch him for a couple hours. His symptoms worsened as the week progressed. Tears roll out of his eyes. His nose is dry. A once hyper/energetic, vibrant, jumping, running, and playful dog is now unable to walk. He lays round and looks so sad and frustrated. I don't want him to suffer like this. I started him on the methyl-B12 yesterday(12/28/2014). I can't stop crying because I'm afraid that we are going to have to put him down I am hopeful that the B12 will work but I'm just not seeing ANY improvement. He is getting it twice a day. I really need some advice It is so hard to watch him struggle like this. Help! :'''(

    Re: Diabetic neuropathy in dogs

Has anyone heard of adding Folate to B12 to assist with reducing/alleviating symptoms of diabetic neuropathy? I'll do ANYTHING and I will TRY ANYTHING to help my poor Min Pin Pinot!!! It is so sad watching him go through this and not being able to help him!

      Re: Question about neuropathy

I'm very sorry you are having so much trouble and that your pup is in such distress! I don't know enough about neuropathy to help you out but did want to let you know you aren't alone! We have quite a few members that I know have used those type of products to help their pups and I'm sure one of them will discuss it with you. Until then, good luck and hugs!!!

        Re: Question about neuropathy

We see a lot of dogs experiencing diabetic neuropathy when first diagnosed with diabetes.

In the vast majority of cases, it's a side effect of very high blood / glucose levels. Tends to improve and symptoms decrease as the dog's B / G is reduced.
        • How much does Pinot weigh??
        • How much, and what kind of insulin is he using?

            Re: Question about neuropathy

Our dog had similar symptoms to those you describe. He could not get out of his bed, stand to pee or walk without our help. He fell over any obstacle and was incredibly weak. He more or less slept for over a month.
We gave him insulin and B12 methyl and ordinary B12 in large amounts. He got completely better and can now run around.
I hope your dog's neuropathy progresses like ours did. It is tough to see them like that and it was only hearing from people on here who had had the same experience that got us through it. (The vet did not realise it was neuropathy and said it was tumours which would kill him in 3 weeks - that was 2 years ago).

So stick with it, keep helping him, keep giving the insulin and B12 and keep looking for tiny tiny signs of improvement. one of our friends told us to give him time to be ill. That was so important - ie just giving him time to be ill then time to get better even though he looked so poorly.
I do very much hope you have a similar story to ours.
            Antonia

              Re: Question about neuropathy

I am sorry for being so slow to get back to this post, which concerns me... the symptoms you describe do sound like some sort of myelopathy but not necessarily diabetic neuropathy.

Has he been seen by an Internal Medicine Specialist or, preferably, a neurologist?

There are many other kinds of problems from the brain down through the spinal cord that can cause the kinds of problems you describe and some fairly simple, noninvasive neurological tests that can determine what exactly is causing the weakness.

Diabetic neuropathy typically only occurs when the blood sugar has been very high for an extended period of time or when there is some other problem with communication over the spinal cord that the higher blood sugar layers over and makes worse.
