Ru was diagnosed 2 wks ago.. she is very picky eater, so I've always cooked for her.. since diagnosis I have tried switching to king canine diabetic dog food and even tried fancy feast cat (both recommended by vet), but she won't eat. Even if I add chicken broth.. are there any good recipes that have the nutrient she needs, that I can make. Thank you in advance

Re: Ru new diagnosis, recipes?
hi and welcome
with being a picky eater even before being diabetic you may want to stick with that diet just because ru has a history eating it . you dont want to get into that battle of trying to get your pup to eat so you can give a dose of insulin
with a homemade diet you would like it to be consistent in amount and ingredients especially at the beginning . there can be some flexibility down the road if you want to explore
now you can give some insulin if some food is consumed or none at all . usually you can give a quarter of the normal dose with no food . if your home testing blood sugar this would make that decision easier
i have been giving jesse a homemade diet from the beginning . i dont know if it was the best path to take but she has done well and enjoys dinner . the thing i like about a homemade diet you can add or remove ingredients to maybe improve blood sugar . some may think thats a bit to complicated and i can understand that but for us its a piece of broccoli i guess cake is not appropriate for a sugar babyJesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .

Re: Ru new diagnosis, recipes?
I agree with Jesse Girl. Getting into a battle over food with a picky diabetic dog just isn't worth it. I would stick with what she's used to (though I would try to keep the fat in her food to a minimum) and get her regulated around her food. People can achieve regulation for their dogs on all types of diets.Sparky Love, diagnosed March 5, 2014. Enrolled in Kinostat study to prevent cataract formation. Re: Ru new diagnosis, recipes?
Welcome ! I agree with the others. I definitely would not do cat food - it is not formulated for dogs. If you happen to boil chicken, use that broth instead of the store bought variety. You might want to add something for fiber like black beans. Battles over food are no fun - I would have loved to cook for Maggie but the few times I tried, she wouldn't eat it! So, that is my cooking skills

Carrots convert to sugar so I would replace those with something else. I think you might need some fiber - you can use black beans or benefiber powder. Make sure you get plain fiber and nothing flavored.Maggie - 15 1/2 y/o JRT diagnosed 9/2007, Angel status on 6/20/16. Her mantra was never give up but her body couldn't keep up with her spirit. Re: Ru new diagnosis, recipes?
i give my jesse half a cup of raw grounded beef heart 2 boiled eggs half a cup of processed raw vegetables (kale broccoli bokchoy zucchini ) half a cup cooked pinto beans and a quarter cup of cooked sweet potato yams . i add a table spoon of a vitamin supplement called veggie blend from natures farmacy for balance and a digestive enhancer from the same place
you just want something your pup will eat day in day out . if your pup is a great eater than it wont matter .Jesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day .
