  • dog treats

my 11yr old Westie has now been diagnosed with diabetes. What kind of dog treats would be safe to give her? I don't want her to feel left out when my other Westie has a treat.Any advice would be gratefully received...thanks

I used to use fresh or freeze dried green beans as well as asparagus.

      +1 with Cara.

Also many dogs like ice cubes! The only trouble with ice cubes and my Annie is that if I turn my back she'll try to hide / bury it under a sofa pillow

I give my pup frozen green beans and either freeze-dried turkey or chicken bites. Also, for a treat before bed she gets a teaspoon of unsweetened, unflavored yogurt which also helps in getting probiotics into her. Best of luck with your pup!

Just curious if they can have any rawhide bones.

I wouldn't give rawhide, but not because of the diabetes. I know of 3 dogs who have had to have emergency surgery to remove impactions due to rawhide. It really isn't safe for dogs.

You will probably get "yes" and "no" to your question

I don't have any here, but you would want to look at the packaging for any extra ingredients.

Every few months I feel sorry for Annie any get her a rawhide or other "treat". I think they frequently cause her blood glucose to drop a bit, not because of the ingredients, but because she goes crazy chewing and running around with it.

              Let's see what others say

By the way, please open a new thread and tell us about your pup. Breed, weight, insulin used, really anything you can share with us.

My mom is the main treat giver here, so the treats I buy for my dogs have to be a little more substantial than vegetables to satisfy her, lol. I buy the Plato EOS line, Etta Says chews, and any American made jerky that only have basically meat and preservative as ingredients. I occasionally buy freeze dried like PureBites or Stella & Chewy's Carnivore Crunch, but my mom thinks they're too small for our big dogs.

Hi! Yes would love to hear more about your Westie!

We are new here (to the diagnosis and the forum) but we have been giving diabetic cookies by Old Dog Cookie Company (I got them from Amazon). I feed Ronak 2-3 freeze-dried beef patties by Stella and Chewy too. We also give a very very small amount of Yoghund frozen yogurt occasionally, or a teaspoon or plain nonfat yogurt.

People suggest green beans, but even frozen, my Ronak looks at me like we have never met before.
Proud mom to Ronak, miniature American Eskimo in NYC born in 2006. Weighs 24 pounds (28 pre-diagnosis). Diagnosed mid-June 2015. Hypothyroid, herniated discs in back, allergic to vaccines, takes Soloxine, Theophylline, and salmon oil. Ronak is a happy boy and his greatest loves are his toys (and me).
