I forgot to mention on Chilibear's post that she has a pretty stinky odor that my vet swears is not that bad and I disagree. I get my dogs groomed every 2 wks. When Chili got sick I went to once a week for her because she started to smell a little funky. The groomer bathes her and like immediately she smells again. I was wondering if any of you have had this problem with your diabetic dog and how you are handling it. I have been through several collars and they smell horrific even after washing and soaking. I've been told it's the insulin and others say it's common with diabetes. Any suggestions?

Re: Odor coming from diabetes or insulin
I wonder if it is something unrelated to the diabetes/insulin.
We have four dogs (only one is diabetic!) and they almost never have any baths. One needs to be clipped and so she does get washed every 12 weeks at the groomer but the others are washed only if they have rolled in something stinky.
The only time one did smell funny was the diabetic one when he was having a particular sort of digestive enzyme on his food and that did give him a rather funny pong. His current enzyme fortunately doesn't have that effect.
Sorry that's probably not much help.....

Re: Odor coming from diabetes or insulin
i have not heard a terrible dog smell do to diabetes or insulin
high sugar and or ketones can provide a smell but that would be a highly unregulated dog and its not really a foul smell
is the odor coming from the body and can you compare the smell to something
has your pup had any blood work done during this period of the stinky . we know infection can smell especially with the mouth
have you changed diet recently ?
i dont think it has anything to do with diabetes if your dog is fairly regulated but even with that not being the case i just have not seen any bad odor dogs on the forumJesse-26 lbs - 16.5 years old ,11 years diabetic, one meal a day homemade and a vitabone snack . 3 shots of Novolin( under the Relion name ) a day . Total insulin for a 24 hour period is 6.5 units of NPH insulin .

Re: Odor coming from diabetes or insulin
I agree that I have not seen anyone complaining about the smell either. She's had so many blood tests and urine tests I can't count. All they ever treated her for was for a UTI back in June when she was initially diagnosed. It's kind of hard when the vet disagrees about the odor but admits that he smells dogs all day and therefore it could be present only he doesn't smell it. lol However, all of my family has noticed the smell and even the groomer says he just can't get rid of it. Weird. I think maybe another visit to the vet is in line and this time I may try a different vet which I didn't want to do because I feel it's better to stay with the vet who has been seeing her since June for this.Originally posted by jesse girl View Posti have not heard a terrible dog smell do to diabetes or insulin

Re: Odor coming from diabetes or insulin
I've never noticed any odor from the insulin or diabetes. Only time I get an ugly odor is when the anal glands let loose. That can clear a room fast!
I have two labs, and then never get baths unless they get into mud etc. I was told it drys out their skin and isn't good for the hair.

Not specifically from insulin, but Annie get smelly-funky ears from time to time. 3 days of Zymox ear treatment clears that up. Diabetes might increase ear infections.

That could be it. High blood glucose can fuel infections anywhere, including the mouth.Originally posted by Mychilibear View PostSmell her breath it will peel paint ...quote from my groomer.Annie was an 18 pound Lhasa Apso that crossed the rainbow bridge on 10-5-17. Re: Odor coming from diabetes or insulin
Maggie has bad breath and my personal opinion is that it is dry mouth. Hers has vastly improved now that I use Zymox dental gel and breath freshener spray. It works like the human product Biotene(in fact, the same scientists developed it) Special needs dogs on medications and older dogs sometimes lose the ability to break down plaque and lack moisture in their mouth. Some dental gels and other rinses have alcohol which dries out the mouth even more. The Zymox doesn't have a minty smell but it does work for us.
Also, some dogs have funky ears (we had a lab who had awful ears) and Maggie also gets a bit of stinky face from allergies. She can get a bit of the yeast funk going on.Maggie - 15 1/2 y/o JRT diagnosed 9/2007, Angel status on 6/20/16. Her mantra was never give up but her body couldn't keep up with her spirit. Have you checked for ketones? Just to make sure. Ketosis can cause strange breath.Sparky Love, diagnosed March 5, 2014. Enrolled in Kinostat study to prevent cataract formation. Pancreatitis June 16, 2014 - hospitalized for 6 days in the ICU. Went to the Rainbow Bridge June 23, 2014. I love you very much, baby.

Re: Odor coming from diabetes or insulin
Is it her breath or her body in general?
Bathing and grooming her can remove the natural oils from her coat, and an off-the-wall suggestion might be to give her time for her natural body oils to repopulate and see how that goes.Clyde: born 21 Feb 2001, dx Dec 2013. Caninsulin 2 x 5u, Prednidale, Pred Forte eye drops. Weight 4.75kg
